ชาดก เป็นเรื่องที่เล่าถึงพระพุทธเจ้

ชาดก เป็นเรื่องที่เล่าถึงพระพุทธเจ้าในชาติก่อน ๆ โดยกล่าวไว้ใน "มหานิบาตชาดก" ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของคัมภีร์พระไตรปิฎก ฉบับพระสูตร (พระสุตตันตปิฎก)
ชาดก เรื่องสำคัญเป็นการบำเพ็ญบารมีของพระโพธิสัตว์ 10 ชาติ หรือเรียกว่า "ทศชาติชาดก" คนไทยเรียกว่า "พระเจ้าสิบชาติ" มหาชนกชาดกเป็นพระโพธิสัตว์ชาติที่ 2 ในทศชาติโดยบำเพ็ญวิริยบารมีหรือความเพียร มีเรื่องย่อดังนี้
ณ เมืองมิถิลาแห่งรัฐวิเทหะ พระเจ้าแผ่นดิน ทรงพระนามว่า พระเจ้ามหาชนก ทรงมีพระโอรสสององค์ คือ
เจ้าอริฏฐชนก และ เจ้าโปลชนก เจ้าอริฏฐชนกทรงเป็นอุปราช ส่วนเจ้าโปลชนกทรง เป็นเสนาบดี เมื่อพระราชบิดาสวรรคต เจ้าอริฏฐชนกผู้เป็นอุปราช ก็ได้ครองบ้านเมืองต่อมา เจ้าโปลชนกทรงเป็นอุปราช ทรงเอาใจใส่ดูแลบ้านเมืองช่วยเหลือ
พระเชษฐาอย่างดียิ่ง มีอำมาตย์คนหนึ่งไม่พอใจพระเจ้าโปลชนก จึงหาอุบายให้ พระราชาอริฏฐชนกระแวงพระอนุชา โดยทูลพระราชาว่า เจ้าโปลชนกคิดขบถ จะปลงพระชนม์พระราชา พระราชาทรงเชื่อคำอำมาตย์ จึงให้จับเจ้าโปลชนกไปขังไว้
