แข่งเรือเป็นกีฬาพื้นเมืองเก่าแก่ชนิดหนึ่งของไทย ที่มีการเล่นสืบทอดกันมาตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ สันนิษฐานว่าน่าจะมีการเล่นแข่งเรือกันแล้วในสมัยสุโขทัย เพราะการศึกสงครามในสมัยก่อนมีทั้งทางบกและทางน้ำ ซึ่งต้องใช้เรือเป็นพาหนะ ย่อมต้องมีการฝึกฝนการพายเรือ แข่งเรือด้วยแต่ไม่มีหลักฐานปรากฏเป็นลายลักษณ์อักษร จากฟลักฐานพบว่ามีการเล่นแข่งเรือกันแล้วในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ดังปรากฏในกฏมณเฑียรบาลเกี่ยวกับพระราชพิธีต่างๆ ในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ได้กล่าวถึงพระราชพิธีประจำเดือน ๑๑ ซึ่งเป็นการอาษยุชพิธีนั้นจะมีพิธีแข่งเรือด้วย นอกจากนี้ในจดหมายเหตุลาลูแบร์ ยังได้กล่าวถึงการเล่นแข่งเรือของชาวบ้านในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ซึ่งมักมีการเล่นการพนันปะปนอยู่ด้วยและเป็นการเล่นที่นิยมกันมากในสมัยนั้นทีเดียว

การเล่นแข่งเรือนับว่าเป็นกีฬาพื้นเมืองที่นิยมเล่นสืบทอดต่อเนื่องกันมาโดยตลอด แม้ในสมัยกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ก็ปรากฏหลักฐานว่ามีการเล่นแข่งเรือกันเป็นประจำเสมอมา เช่น ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๒ เมื่อครั้งทรงโปรดให้ปรับปรุงพระราชวัง มีการขุดสระภายในพระราชวังใน พ.ศ. ๒๓๖๑ ก็ทรงโปรดให้มีการแข่งเรือในครั้งนั้นด้วย ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๕ การแข่งเรือเป็นกีฬาที่เล่นกันอย่างแพร่หลาย เมื่อมีชาวต่างชาติมาเยี่ยมเยือนก็ได้จัดการเล่นแข่งเรือให้พวกชาวต่างชาติชมด้วย ดังปรากฏในพระราชนิพนธ์ตอนหนึ่งความว่า

“เยนวันนี้มีกานแข่งนาวา ที่กรงน่าตำหนักแพแม่น้ำใหญ่

เรือที่นั่งกราบสี่เอกไชย มาพายให้เจ้าฝรั่งเขานั่งดู”

(พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าอยู่หัว, ๒๔๕๖ : ๑๕)

การเล่นแข่งเรือคือของชาวบ้านในภาคกลางสมัยก่อนมีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อเป็นการทำบุญทำกุศล คือ ชาวบ้านจะเล่นกันในเทศกาลทอดกฐิน ทอดผ้าป่า ซึ่งจะอยู่ในช่วงเดือน ๑๐ – ๑๒ ซึ่งระยะนี้จะเป็นช่วงฤดูน้ำมาก ชาวบ้านที่อยู่ตามริมฝั่งแม่น้ำจะใช้เรือเป็นพาหนะเมื่อมีงานพิธีทำบุญจะมีการแห่แหนกันทางนั้นเพื่อนำองค์กฐิน องค์ผ้าป่าไปยังวัด เมื่อเสร็จพิธีทางศาสนาแล้วก็จะมีการเล่นแข่งเรือกัน ซึ่งถือกันว่าผู้ที่ร่วมแข่งขันจะได้บุญอีกทางหนึ่งด้วย นอกจากนี้การเล่นแข่งเรือยังมีการเล่นเพื่อจุดมุ่งหมายอีกหลายประการ เช่น บางท้องถิ่นจะจัดให้มีการแข่งเรือในงานทำบุญไหว้พระประจำปีของแต่ละท้องถิ่น บางแห่งจะมีการแข่งเรือเพื่อเป็นการบวงสรวงสักการะสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่ชาวบ้านนับถือ บางแห่งจัดให้มีการเล่นแข่งเรือในงานเทศกาลสนุกสนานรื่นเริงต่างๆ เป็นต้น

อย่างไรก็ตาม การแข่งเรือมักนิยมจัดให้มีการเล่นเฉพาะในฤดูน้ำมากเท่านั้น การเล่นแข่งเรือของชาวบ้านสมัยก่อนในภาคกลางมักจัดเป็นประเพณีประจำปี และมีการเล่นเป็นที่แพร่หลายแทบทุกจังหวัด เช่น จังหวัดประจวบคีรีขันธ์ ราชบุรี สมุทรสงคราม สมุทรสาคร สมุทรปราการ กาญจนบุรี กรุงเทพฯ จันทบุรี อ่างทอง สุพรรณบุรี สิงห์บุรี และนครสวรรค์ เป็นต้น ไม่เพียงแต่ภาคกลางเท่านั้นที่นิยมเล่นการแข่งเรือ แต่ภาคอื่นๆทุกๆภาค ไม่ว่าจะเป็นภาคเหนือ ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ และภาคใต้ ก็ล้วนมีการแข่งเรือเป็นเทศกาลสำคัญของแต่ละภาคทั้งสิ้น อาจกล่าวได้ว่าการแข่งเรือเป็นกีฬาพื้นเมืองของชาติไทยโดยแท้ก็ว่าได้เพราะมีการเล่นเป็นที่ยอมรับว่ามีความสำคัญในทุกๆภาคของประเทศ ในปัจจุบันการเล่นแข่งเรือยังมีเล่นกันอยู่โดยทั่วไป

โอกาสที่เล่น

เล่นกันในโอกาสงานทำบุญต่างๆ เช่น งานเข้าพรรษา งานออกพรรษา ทอดกฐิน ทอดผ้าป่า งานไหว้พระ และงานรื่นเริงต่างๆ มักจัดให้มีการแข่งเรือกันในช่วงฤดูน้ำมาก โดยเริ่มตั้งแต่เดือนพฤษภาคมเรื่อยไป และจัดกันมากขึ้นในช่วงราวเดือนตุลาคมถึงเดือนธันวาคม

ผู้เล่น

อุปกรณ์การเล่น

๑. เรือพายที่มีขนาดเล็กใหญ่ตามแต่จะตกลงกัน ชนิดของเรือที่ใช้แข่งขันกันมีหลายประเภท เช่น เรือแจว เรือบด เรือเพรียว เรือเข็ม เรือยาว เรือเผ่นม้า เรือมาด และเรือสำปั้น เป็นต้น มักจะใช้เรือที่มีชนิดและประเภทเดียวกันเข้าแข่งขันกัน จำนวนทีมละ ๑ ลำ

สถานที่เล่น

เล่นในแม่ย้ำลำคลอง บึง ทะเลสาบหรือบริเวณที่มีแหล่งน้ำกว้าง โดยจะกำหนดให้มีแนวยาวเป็นทุ่นหรือปักธงไว้ที่ริมตลิ่งเป็นแนวตรงและเป็นแนวยาวกั้นทั้งสองฝั่งเพื่อเป็นเส้นเริ่ม จากเส้นเริ่มเป็นระยะห่างตามแต่จะตกลงกัน (โดยมากมักแข่งกันเป็นระยะทางตั้งแต่ ๒๐๐ เมตรขึ้นไป) จะกำหนดแนวยาวโดยใช้ทุ่นหรือปักธงไว้ที่ริมตลิ่งทั้ง ๒ ด้าน เพื่อเป็นแนวเส้นชัย

วิธีเล่น

๓. เรือลำใดไปถึงเส้นชัยก่อนจะเป็นผู้ชนะ
