โครงการปรับปรุงพันธุ์ข้าวโพดของมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ได้ทำการวิจัยและพัฒนาพันธุ์ข้าวโพดไร่มาอย่างต่อเนื่องเป็นเวลา 45 ปี โดยแบ่งเป็นงานวิจัยพื้นฐาน 20% เพื่อใช้ประโยชน์ในด้านการสอนระดับอุดมศึกษาและการทำวิจัยของนิสิตระดับปริญญาโทและเอก และเป็นงานวิจัยประยุกต์ 80% เพื่อตอบสนองความต้องการ และแก้ไขปัญหาของประเทศ โดยพัฒนาข้าวโพดพันธุ์ผสมเปิดและพันธุ์ลูกผสมที่ให้ผลผลิตสูงและต้านทานโรคราน้ำค้างให้เกษตรกรใช้ปลูก ตลอดจนได้พัฒนาสายพันธุ์แท้ให้ภาครัฐและภาคเอกชนนำไปใช้ในการผลิตเมล็ดพันธุ์และปรับปรุงพันธุ์ลูกผสม การวิจัยและพัฒนาพันธุ์ได้รับความร่วมมือจากหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ ทั้งในประเทศ ได้แก่ มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ กรมวิชาการเกษตร กรมส่งเสริมการเกษตร วิทยาลัยเกษตรกรรม และบริษัทเมล็ดพันธุ์ต่าง ๆ ตลอดจนองค์กรวิจัยนานาชาติ ได้แก่ มูลนิธิร็อกกี้เฟลเลอร์ และศูนย์ปรับปรุงข้าวโพดและข้าวสาลีนานาชาติ (CIMMYT)

ข้าวโพดไร่พันธุ์ผสมเปิดที่ดีเด่น

โครงการปรับปรุงพันธุ์ข้าวโพดของมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ ได้ทำการวิจัยและพัฒนาพันธุ์ข้าวโพดไร่พันธุ์ผสมเปิดอย่างเข้มข้นต่อเนื่องเป็นเวลาถึง 35 ปี และได้แนะนำพันธุ์ผสมเปิดที่ดีสู่เกษตรกร ได้แก่ พันธุ์สุวรรณ 1 (พ.ศ. 2518), พันธุ์สุวรรณ 2 (พ.ศ. 2522), พันธุ์สุวรรณ 3 (พ.ศ. 2530) และพันธุ์สุวรรณ 5 (พ.ศ. 2536) พันธุ์ผสมเปิด และพันธุ์ลูกผสมต่าง ๆ จากภาครัฐและภาคเอกชน รวมทั้งการปรับปรุงการเขตกรรม เป็นปัจจัยสำคัญทำให้ผลการปลูกข้าวโพดในปีเพาะปลูก 2518/19-2534/35 มีผลผลิตเฉลี่ย 372 กก./ไร่ ผลผลิตรวมเฉลี่ย 3.45 ล้านตัน และมีมูลค่าส่งออกเฉลี่ย 6,059 ล้านบาท สูงกว่าปีเพาะปลูก 2501/02-2517/18 ซึ่งให้ผลผลิตเฉลี่ย 313 กก./ไร่ ผลผลิตรวมเฉลี่ย 1.23 ล้านตัน และมีมูลค่าส่งออกเฉลี่ย 1,540 ล้านบาท ถึง 19%, 181% และ 293% ตามลำดับ ถึงแม้ว่า ข้าวโพดพันธุ์ลูกผสมจะมีบทบาทสำคัญมากขึ้นในระยะ 10 ปีต่อมา แต่ยังมีอัตราการใช้เมล็ดพันธุ์ผสมเปิด ประมาณ 10% ของปริมาณเมล็ดพันธุ์ทั้งหมด
