สมัย กรุงธนบุรีประมาณ พ.ศ.2310 พระเจ้าองค์เวียนดาแห่งนครเวียงจันทน์ ได้สิ้นพระชนม์ โอรสท้าวเพี้ยเมืองแสนได้ยกกองทัพเข้ายึดเมืองเวียงจันทน์และได้สถาปนา ขึ้นเป็น พระเจ้าแผ่นดินสืบแทน ทรงพระนามว่า "พระเจ้าศิริบุญสาร" พ.ศ. 2320 ท้าวโสมพะมิตร และ อุปราชเมืองแสนฆ้องโปง เมืองแสนหน้าง้ำเกิดขัดใจกับพระเจ้าศิริบุญสาร จึงรวบรวมผู้คนอพยพจากดินแดนทางฝั่งซ้ายแม่น้ำโขง ข้ามมาตั้งบ้านเรือนบริเวณลุ่มน้ำก่ำแถบบ้านพรรณา (ปัจจุบันอยู่ในเขตจังหวัดสกลนคร) ต่อมาท้าวศิริบุญสารได้ยกกองทัพติดตามมา ท้าวโสมพะมิตรจึงอพยพต่อไปโดยแยกเป็น 2 สาย คือ

สายที่ 2 มีท้าวโสมพะมิตรเป็นหัวหน้า ได้อพยพข้ามสันเขาภูพานลงมาทางใต้ และตั้งบ้านเรือนอยู่ที่บ้านกลางหมื่น ต่อมาท้าวโสมพะมิตร ได้ส่งท้าวตรัยและคณะ ออกเสาะหาชัยภูมิที่จะสร้างเมืองใหม่ใช้เวลาประมาณปีเศษจึงพบทำเลที่เหมาะสม คือบริเวณลำน้ำปาวและเห็นว่าแก่งสำโรงชายสงเปลือยมีดิน น้ำอุดมสมบูรณ์ จึงอพยพผู้คนมาตั้งบ้านเรือนและได้จัดตั้งศาลเจ้าพ่อหลักเมือง



พ.ศ. 2336 ท้าวโสมพะมิตรได้ นำเครื่องบรรณาการ คือ กาน้ำสัมฤทธิ์ เข้าถวายสวามิภักดิ์ต่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช รัชกาลที่ 1 แห่งราชวงศ์จักรี และขอตั้งบ้านแก่งสำโรงขึ้นเป็นเมือง ได้รับพระราชทานนามว่า "กาฬสินธุ์" และได้แต่งตั้งให้ ท้าวโสมพะมิตรเป็น "พระยาชัยสุนทร"



พ.ศ. 2437 สมัยพระยาชัยสุนทร (ท้าวเก) ได้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปแบบการปกครองเป็นแบบเทศาภิบาล มี มณฑล จังหวัด อำเภอ ตำบล และให้เมืองกาฬสินธุ์ เป็น "อำเภออุทัยกาฬสินธุ์" ขึ้นกับจังหวัดร้อยเอ็ด



วันที่ 1 สิงหาคม 2456 ได้ยกฐานะอำเภออุทัยกาฬสินธุ์เป็น "จังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์" ให้มีอำนาจปกครอง อำเภออุทัยกาฬสินธุ์ อำเภอสหัสขันธ์ อำเภอกุฉินารายณ์ อำเภอ กมลาไสย และอำเภอยางตลาด โดยให้ขึ้นต่อมณฑลร้อยเอ็ด



วันที่ 18 กุมภาพันธ์ 2474 จังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์ถูกยุบเป็นอำเภอ ขึ้นกับจังหวัดมหาสารคาม และ 1 ตุลาคม 2490 ได้ยกฐานะเป็น "จังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์" จนถึงปัจจุบัน
