พระพุทธศาสนาถือได้ว่าเป็นศาสนาประจำชาติ และอยู่เคียงคู่กับชาติไทยมาโดยตลอด ดังนั้นพระพุทธศาสนาจึงมีความสำคัญต่อสังคมไทย พอสรุปได้ดังนี้[4]

๑) พระพุทธศาสนาเป็นหลักในการดำเนินชีวิตของคนไทย เพราะคนไทยนำหลักธรรมมาประพฤติปฏิบัติในชีวิตประจำวัน และลักษณะนิสัยของคนไทยมีจิตใจที่ดีงามใน ทุกๆ ด้าน มีความเป็นมิตรกับทุกคน เป็นต้น

๒) พระพุทธศาสนาเป็นหลักในการปกครองประเทศ กษัตริย์ทุกพระองค์ของไทยได้นำเอาหลักธรรมพระพุทธศาสนาไปใช้ในการปกครองประเทศ เช่น ทศพิธราชธรรม ตลอดมา หรือใช้หลัก “ธรรมาธิปไตย” และหลักอปาริหานิยธรรม เป็นหลักในการปกครองในระบอบประชาธิปไตย เป็นต้น

๓) พระพุทธศาสนาเป็นศูนย์รวมจิตใจ เนื่องจากหลักธรรมในพระพุทธศาสนามุ่งเน้นให้เกิดความรักความสามัคคีกัน มีความเมตตากรุณาต่อกัน เป็นต้น จึงเป็นศูนย์รวมจิตใจของชนชาวไทยให้มีความเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกัน

๔) พระพุทธศาสนาเป็นที่มาของวัฒนธรรมไทย ด้วยวิถีชีวิตของคนไทยผูกพันกับพระพุทธศาสนา จึงเป็นกรอบในการปฏิบัติตนตามหลักพิธีกรรมในพระพุทธศาสนาต่าง ๆ เช่น การบวช การแต่งงาน การทำบุญเนื่องในพิธีการต่างๆ การปฏิบัติตนตามประเพณีในวันสำคัญทางพระพุทธศาสนา เป็นต้น ซึ่งเป็นส่วนที่ก่อให้เกิดวัฒนธรรมไทยจนถึงปัจจุบัน

๕) พระพุทธศาสนาในฐานะเป็นสถาบันหลักของสังคมไทย พระพุทธศาสนา เป็นศาสนาที่สังคมไทยส่วนใหญ่นับถือ และสืบทอดกันมาเป็นช้านาน ดังนั้นพระพุทธศาสนาจึงมีบทบาทสำคัญของวิถีชีวิตของคนไทย พระพุทธศาสนาจึงมีความสำคัญในด้านต่างๆ ทั้งด้านการศึกษา ด้านสังคม และด้านศิลปกรรม

๖) พระพุทธศาสนาในฐานะเป็นรากฐานของวัฒนธรรม วิถีชีวิตของคนไทยผูกพันอยู่อย่างแนบแน่นกับพระพุทธศาสนา ซึมแทรกผสมผสานอยู่ในแนวความคิด จิตใจและกิจกรรมแทบทุกก้าวของชีวิตโดยตลอดเวลายาวนาน โดยยังคงเนื้อหาสาระเดิมที่บริสุทธิ์ไว้ได้ก็มี ถูกดัดแปลงเสริมแต่งตลอดจนปนเปกับความเชื่อถือและข้อปฏิบัติสายอื่นหรือผันแปรในด้านเหตุอื่นๆ จนผิดเพี้ยนไปจากเดิมก็มาก

๗) พระพุทธศาสนาในฐานะเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของชาติ การที่พระพุทธศาสนาอยู่กับคนไทยมาช้านาน จึงก่อให้เกิดการซึมซาบเอาหลักปฏิบัติของพระพุทธศาสนาให้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชีวิต ก่อให้เกิดความเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของคนไทยที่ไม่เหมือนกับชาติอื่นๆ ที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์เด่นได้แก่ รักความเป็นอิสระ และความมีน้ำใจไมตรี

๙) พระพุทธศาสนาในฐานะที่ช่วยสร้างสรรค์อารยธรรม ชนชาติหนึ่ง ๆ นอกจากมีหน้าที่ต้องพัฒนาประเทศชาติของตนเองแล้ว ก็พึงมีส่วนร่วมในการสร้างสรรค์และส่งเสริมอารยธรรมโลกด้วย ชนชาติไทยเป็นชนชาติที่เก่าแก่มากชนชาติหนึ่ง มีวัฒนธรรมที่เจริญก้าวหน้าอย่างสูงมาตลอดเวลายาวนาน จึงได้มีส่วนร่วมในการสร้างเสริมอารยธรรมของโลกด้วย แม้ว่าจะอยู่ในขอบเขตที่ไม่กว้างนัก ส่วนร่วมที่ว่านี้ก็คือ ศิลปวัฒนธรรมไทย ซึ่งพัฒนาขึ้นมาจนมีแบบแผนเป็นของตนเอง อย่างที่เรียกว่ามีเอกลักษณ์ของความเป็นไทยเด่นชัด ศิลปวัฒนธรรมไทยเหล่านี้มีรากฐานมาจากพระพุทธศาสนาเป็นส่วนใหญ่
