อุทยานแห่งชาติห้วยน้ำดัง ตั้งอยู่บนเทือกเขาถนนธงชัยมีพื้นที่ครอบคลุมอยู่ในท้องที่อำเภอแม่แตง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ และอำเภอปาย จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน รวมเนื้อที่ทั้งหมดประมาณ 179.5 ตารางกิโลเมต หรือ 112,187.5 ไร่ ลักษณะภูมิประเทศเป็นเทือกเขาและภูเขาสูงสลับซับซ้อน ภูเขาที่สูงที่สุด คือ ดอยช้าง ซึ่งเป็นป่าต้นน้ำลำธารและมีลำห้วยน้อยใหญ่มากมาย ในช่วงฤดูหนาวจะมีอากาศเย็น ลมแรงและมีฝนตกชุกในเดือนพฤษภาคม-ตุลาคม ส่วนในช่วงฤดูร้อน มีอุณหภูมิสูงสุดประมาณ 34 องศาเซลเซียส
