สะพานพระพุทธยอดฟ้า เป็นสะพานที่สร้างขึ้นในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (รัชกาลที่ 7) เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2472 เนื่องในโอกาสสถาปนากรุงเทพมหานครครบ 150 ปี และโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้มีพระราชพิธีฉลองพระนครครบ 150 ปี ด้วยพระราชดำริที่จะสร้างสิ่งที่เป็นอนุสรณ์ถึงความรำลึกในพระกรุณาธิคุณของพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช ผู้ทรงสถาปนากรุงเทพมหานคร โดยมีพระราชดำริว่าควรสร้างพระบรมราชานุสาวรีย์ พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช และสร้างสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาเชื่อมจังหวัดพระนครกับธนบุรีเข้าด้วยกัน เพื่อให้การคมนาคมติดต่อสะดวก ทั้งยังเป็นการขยายพระนครอีกด้วย จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้คิดแบบพระบรมราชานุสาวรีย์ และสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาขึ้นประกอบกันเป็นปฐมบรมราชานุสรณ์ที่ปลายถนนตรีเพชร ถือเป็นสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาแห่งที่ 2 ถัดจากสะพานพระราม 6 ที่สร้างในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 6
