จังหวัดชัยภูมิ เป็นจังหวัดในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือตอนล่างของประเทศไทย ก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2440 ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวรัชกาลที่ 5 ทรงได้เปลี่ยนแปลงระบบการปกครองประเทศใหม่จัดเมืองต่าง ๆ เป็นมณฑล จังหวัด อำเภอ ตำบล และหมู่บ้าน โดยรวมเอา 5 เมืองที่ขึ้นต่อเมืองนครราชสีมาในอดีต ได้แก่ เมืองชัยภูมิ เมืองสี่มุม (จัตุรัส) เมืองภูเขียว (ผักปัง) เมืองเกษตรสมบูรณ์ (บ้านยาง) และเมืองบำเหน็จณรงค์ (บ้านชวน) โดยเลือกเอาเมืองชัยภูมิ ซึ่งอยู่ตรงกลางระหว่างสองเมืองใหญ่คือเมืองสี่มุม (จัตุรัส) และเมืองภูเขียว (ผักปัง) ยกฐานะเป็นศูนย์กลางของจังหวัด และเปลี่ยนเป็นอำเภอเมืองชัยภูมิ ยุบเมืองทั้ง 4 เป็นอำเภอ ได้แก่ อำเภอจัตุรัส อำเภอภูเขียว อำเภอเกษตรสมบูรณ์ และอำเภอบำเหน็จณรงค์ ต่อมาได้มีการยุบอำเภอบำเหน็จณรงค์ให้อยู่ในการปกครองของอำเภอจัตุรัส และยุบอำเภอเกษตรสมบูรณ์ให้อยู่ในการปกครองของอำเภอภูเขียว เนื่องจากอำเภอทั้ง 2 นั้นอยู่ไม่ไกลกัน จังหวัดชัยภูมิจึงเหลืออยู่ 3 อำเภอ ได้แก่ อำเภอเมืองชัยภูมิ อำเภอจัตุรัส และอำเภอภูเขียว ที่เป็น 3 เมืองเสาหลัก ร่วมก่อตั้งจังหวัดชัยภูมิขึ้นมา และเจริญมาตามลำดับ ปัจจุบันจังหวัดชัยภูมิแบ่งการปกครองทั้งหมด 16 อำเภอ เป็นจังหวัดที่มีพื้นที่ขนาดใหญ่เป็นอันดับ 3 ของภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ และอันดับ 7 ของประเทศ โดยมีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 12,778.3 ตารางกิโลเมตร เป็นที่ตั้งของแหล่งอารยธรรมอันเก่าแก่นับตั้งแต่สมัยทวารวดี สมัยขอม กระทั่งสมัยที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากอาณาจักรล้านช้าง
