สมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ก่อตั้งขึ้นโดยปฏิญญากรุงเทพ เมื่อวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2510 โดยมีสมาชิกทั้งหมด 10 ประเทศ คือ อินโดนีเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ มาเลเซีย สิงคโปร์ ไทย บรูไนดารุสซาลาม เวียดนาม ประเทศลาว, ประเทศพม่า และประเทศกัมพูชา มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อส่งเสริมความเข้าใจอันดีระหว่างประเทศ รักษาสันติภาพ และความมั่นคงทางการเมือง สร้างสรรค์ความเจริญก้าวหน้าทางด้านเศรษฐกิจ การพัฒนาทางสังคมของประชาชนบนพื้นฐานของความเสมอภาคและผลประโยชน์ร่วมกันของประเทศสมาชิก
ประชาคมอาเซียนที่กำลังจะมาถึงในปลายปีนี้ เป็นเรื่องหนึ่งที่คนไทยต้องให้ความสำคัญ เนื่องจากจะมีการแข่งขันกันในด้านต่างๆเพิ่มมากขึ้นทั้งในเด็กเยาวชน และวัยทำงาน ต่างเตรียมตัวที่จะเข้าสู่ประชาคมอาเซียนไม่ว่าจะเป็น ภาษา การเรียน การทำงาน เศรษฐกิจของประเทศ ทุกคนก็ต้องปรับตัวเพื่อเตรียมความพร้อมสำหรับการเข้าไปเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในประชาคมอาเซียน โดยเฉพาะนักเรียนไทย ต้องมีการรับมือกับนักเรียนต่างชาติที่จะเข้ามาศึกษาในประเทศไทย เราต้องปรับตัวและมีการเรียนการสอนวิชาอาเซียนศึกษา แต่เราก็ต้องมีความรู้เกี่ยวกับภาษาอังกฤษไว้เป็นพื้นฐาน ยิ่งเราไม่ค่อยมีพื้นฐานทางด้านภาษาและไม่ได้เรียนมาตั้งแต่เด็ก ทำให้เราเสียเปรียบประเทศเพื่อนบ้าน ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ภาษาอังกฤษ ภาษาจีน ภาษาฝรั่งเศส เป็นต้น การเรียนก็จะมีการแข่งขันกันมาขึ้นเพราะว่าจะไม่ได้มีเพียงเด็กไทย แต่จะมีนักเรียนจากประเทศอาเซียนมาเรียนด้วย สอบด้วย การสอบเข้ามหาวิทยาลัยก็จะยากขึ้น ดังนั้นนักเรียนไทยจึงต้องพัฒนาความสามารถของตนเองให้มากขึ้น เพื่อให้มีคุณสมบัติมากพอที่สามารถเข้าทำงานทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศได้โดยง่ายมี เพราะหากเรามีภาษาที่แข็งแรงก็จะไม่เกิดข้อเปรียบเทียบและจะไม่เสียโอกาสในการทำงาน นอกจากนั้นเราต้องศึกษาความรู้และความสำคัญของประเทศต่างๆ ทั้งวัฒนธรรมเพื่อให้สามารถอยู่ร่วมกันได้
อาเซียนมีความสำคัญกับประเทศไทยในหลายๆด้าน เช่นด้านเศรษฐกิจ ด้านการศึกษา และการเชื่อมสัมพันธไมตรีกับเพื่อนบ้าน อาเซียนจะสามารถทำให้พวกเราพัฒนาประเทศและก้าวต่อไป ในฐานะที่เราเป็นคนไทยเราจึงต้องมีความรู้เรื่องเกี่ยวกับอาเซียนให้มากเข้าไว้ โดยผู้ใหญ่ควรจะเตรียมความพร้อมให้เยาวชนด้วย เพื่อให้เรามีคุณสมบัติตรงกับคำขวัญของอาเซียนที่ว่า ” หนึ่งวิสัยทัศน์ หนึ่งเอกลักษณ์ หนึ่งประชาคม”
