ตำบลลำปางหลวง อำเภอเกาะคา เป็นวัดคู่บ้านคู่เมืองลำปางมาแต่โบราณ ตามตำนานกล่าวว่ามีมาตั้งแต่สมัยพระนางจามเทวี ราวปลายพุทธศตวรรษที่ 20 เป็นวัดไม้ที่สมบูรณ์ที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งของไทย งดงามด้วยสถาปัตยกรรมเก่าแก่มากมายได้แก่
- พระธาตุลำปางหลวง เป็นพระธาตุประจำปีเกิดของคนปีฉลู ด้วยเริ่มสร้างในปีฉลูและเสร็จในปีฉลูเช่นกัน ฐานเป็นบัวลูกแก้ว ส่วนองค์เป็นทรงกลมแบบล้านนาภายนอกบุด้วยทองจังโก ยอดฉัตรทำด้วยทองคำ มีลายสลักดุนเป็นลวดลายประจำยามแบบต่าง ๆ ลักษณะเจดีย์แบบนี้ได้ส่งอิทธิพลต่อพระธาตุหริภุญไชย และพระบรมธาตุจอมทอง ภายในองค์พระเจดีย์บรรจุพระเกศา และพระอัฐิธาตุจากพระนลาฎข้างขวา พระศอด้านหน้าและด้านหลัง ที่รั้วทองเหลืองรอบองค์พระธาตุมีรูกระสุนปืนที่หนานทิพย์ช้างยิงท้าวมหายศปรากฏอยู่

เมื่อหันหน้าเข้าหาวิหารหลวง ด้านขวามือ คือ วิหารน้ำแต้ม หรือวิหารภาพเขียนสี (“แต้ม” แปลว่า ภาพเขียน) สร้างเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2044 เป็นวิหารเปิดโล่งที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดอีกหลังหนึ่งทางภาคเหนือ คงรูปแบบของสถาปัตยกรรมไทยที่งดงาม ภายในไม่มีฝ้าเพดาน กำแพงด้านพระประธานเขียนภาพลายทองบนพื้นรักแดง มีภาพจิตรกรรมศิลปะล้านนาบนแผงไม้คอสองที่กล่าวกันว่าเก่าแก่ที่สุด และหลงเหลือเพียงแห่งเดียวในเมืองไทย อายุราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 21 ลงมา แต่ปัจจุบันภาพเขียนลบเลือนไปมาก และประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปสำริดปางมารวิชัย หน้าตักกว้าง 1.25 เมตร สูง 1.25 เมตร
- ซุ้มพระบาท สร้างครอบพระพุทธบาทไว้ ฐานก่อขึ้นเป็นชั้นคล้ายฐานเจดีย์ สร้างเมื่อ พ.ศ. 1992 ภายในมองเห็นแสงหักเห ปรากฏเป็นเงาพระธาตุและพระวิหารในด้านมุมกลับ แต่มีข้อห้ามไม่ให้ผู้หญิงขึ้น
