ในด้านศาสนา พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯได้ทรงบำเพ็ญพระราชกรณียกิจหลายประการในการทะนุบำรุงศาสนาต่างๆ ในประเทศไทยมีพระราชจริยวัตรเลื่อมใสศรัทธาในพระพุทธศาสนา และทรงเป็นพุทธมามกะผู้เคร่งครัดและสม่ำเสมอด้วย ปฏิบัติบูชาทรงพระกรุณาประมวลคำสอนของพระภิกษุผู้เป็นพระอาจารย์ทรงคุณธรรมสูง พระราชทานแก่ข้าราชบริพารและข้าราชการในราชสำนัก ด้วยมีพระราชประสงค์ให้ข้าราชสำนักเป็นผู้ใฝ่ในทางธรรม เพื่อความเจริญของตนเองและหมู่คณะ ทั้งในหน้าที่การงานและชีวิตส่วนตัว การเกื้อกูลข้าราชบริพารเช่นนี้ เป็นวัตรข้อหนึ่งในจักวรรดิวัตร นอกจากนั้น ยังได้พระราชทานพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์คุ้มครองและให้ความเป็นธรรมแก่ทุกศาสนา

นอกจากนั้น ยังได้พระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์อุปถัมภ์บำรุงศาสนาอื่น ๆ พระราชทานพระบรมราโชวาทแก่ผู้แทนขององค์การศาสนาต่าง ๆ
