ตำนานการแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุ
ในสมัยอาณาจักรศรีวิชัย  ราว พ.ศ. 1773 ในสมัยพระเจ้าสามพี่น้อง คือ พระเจ้าศรีธรรมโศกมหาราช พระเจ้าจันทรภาณุและพระเจ้าพงษาสุระทรงประกอบพระราชพิธีวิสาขะสมโภชพระบรมธาตุครั้งแรกเพื่ออุทิศส่วนกุศลให้กับพุทธศาสนิกชน กลุ่มหนึ่ง ที่ลงเรือมาจากเมืองอินทรปัตซึ่งอยู่แถวลุ่มแม่น้ำโขง  เพื่อนำพระบฏไปถวายเป็นพุทธบูชาพระทันตธาตุคือ  พระเขี้ยวแก้วที่เกาะลังกา (ประเทศศรีลังกา)  แต่เรือถูมรสุม หัวหน้าพุทธศาสนิกชนกลุ่มนี้ตาย เหลือเพียงบริวารรอดขึ้นฝั่งที่ท่าศาลา  ประมาณ  10  คน  ส่วนพระบฏถูกคลื่นซัดขึ้นฝั่งที่ปากพนัง

ครั้นถึงสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้มีพระราชประสงค์ให้พุทธศาสนิกชนจัดพิธีทางศาสนาพุทธ ในวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 3   ชาวเมืองจึงจัดให้มีการเวียนเทียนรอบพระบรมธาตุเจดีย์อีกวัน  (แต่ในวันนี้ไม่มีการสวดสมโภชพระบรมธาตุแต่อย่างใด) ประชาชนที่มาจากต่างเมืองจึงได้ถือเป็นโอกาสเอาผ้าที่เตรียมมาแห่ขึ้นห่มพระธาตุ
                ด้วยเหตุนี้ ประเพณีแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุของเมืองนครจึงมีปีละ  2  ครั้ง  คือในวันเพ็ญเดือนสาม  (วันมาฆบูชา)  และในวันเพ็ญเดือนหก  (วันวิสาขบูชา)  แต่ด้วยสมัยก่อนการคมนาคมไม่สะดวก  ประชาชนจึงนิยมเข้าร่วมประเพณีนี้ในวันเพ็ญเดือนสามมากกว่าวันเพ็ญเดือนหก  เพราะในเดือนสามน้ำในแม่น้ำลำคลองจะเต็ม  ส่วนในเดือนหกน้ำจะแห้ง
                ผ้าพระบฎ  เป็นผ้าที่เขียนเรื่องราวพุทธประวัติ  ปัจจุบันการทำผ้าพระบฏเป็นการยากและต้นทุนสูง  จึงใช้เป็นผ้าขาว  ผ้าเหลือง  ผ้าแดงสุดแต่จะชอบ ชื่อประเพณีก็คงเหลือเพียง  แห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุ  เป็นพุทธบูชา
                แต่เดิมการแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุ  จะนัดหมายโดยพร้อมเพรียงเป็นขบวนใหญ่เดินเป็นแถวเรียงเป็นริ้วยาวไปตามความยาวของผ้า  ทุกคนเทิน (ทูน)  ผ้าพระบฏไว้เหนือศีรษะ  และมีดนตรีพื้นบ้านนำขบวนได้แก่  ดนตรีหนังตะลุง  ดนตรีโนรา
                ปัจจุบันการเดินทางสะดวกขึ้น  ผู้คนที่ศรัทธามาจากหลายทิศทางต่างคนต่างคณะก็เตรียมผ้ามาห่มพระธาตุ  ใครจะตั้งขบวนแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุ  จึงมีตลอดทั้งวันไม่ขาดสาย  (ใต้...หรอย มีลุย.2547,34-35)
