อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัยตั้งอยู่ที่ตำบลศรีสัชนาลัย บริเวณที่เรียกว่า “แก่งหลวง” ห่างจากตัวอำเภอศรีสัชนาลัยลงมาทางอำเภอสวรรคโลก 11 กิโลเมตร หรือห่างจากกรุงเทพฯ ประมาณ 550 กิโลเมตร ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ในเขตของตำบลศรีสัชนาลัย ตำบลสารจิตร ตำบลหนองอ้อ ตำบลท่าชัย ส่วนตัวเมืองโบราณศรีสัชนาลัยอยู่ในเขตหมู่บ้านพระปรางค์ ตำบลศรีสัชนาลัย มีพื้นที่ทั้งหมดประณ 45.14 ตารางกิโลเมตร เดิมชื่อว่า “เมืองเชลียง” แล้วเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “ศรีสัชนาลัย” ในสมัยกษัตริย์ราชวงศ์พระร่วงขึ้นครองกรุงสุโขทัย และได้สร้างเมืองขึ้นใหม่เป็นศูนย์กลางการปกครองแทนเมืองเชลียง ในบริเวณอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์มีโบราณสถาน และโบราณวัตถุทั้งหมด 215 แห่ง สำรวจค้นพบแล้ว 204 แห่ง

การเดินทาง  รถยนต์  จากตัวเมืองสุโขทัย ใช้ทางหลวงหมายเลข 101  เส้นสุโขทัย-สวรรคโลก-ศรีสัชนาลัย ไปจนถึงระหว่างกิโลเมตรที่ 17 - 19  เลี้ยวซ้ายข้ามสะพานแม่น้ำยม จะมีทางแยกขวาเข้าอุทยานฯ ไป ประมาณ 1.5  กิโลเมตร เป็นระยะทาง 68  กิโลเมตร หรือ รถโดยสารประจำทาง มีรถสายสุโขทัย-ศรีสัชนาลัย ออกจากท่ารถที่ตลาดเทศบาลไปอุทยานฯ ทุกวัน นอกจากนี้นักท่องเที่ยวสามารถใช้เส้นทางจากอำเภอสวรรคโลกไปตามทางหลวงหมายเลข 1201 ไปจนถึงตำบลเมืองเก่า บริเวณเชิงสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำยมแล้วเลี้ยวซ้ายเข้าอุทยานฯ อีก 2  กิโลเมตร รวมระยะทาง 22 กิโลเมตร
