การลอยกระทงมีวัตถุประสงค์ด้วยกัน 2 ประการ คือ
1. เพื่อบูชาพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า
ส่วนทางเหนือนั้นมีประเพณียี่เป็ง มีทั้งลอยกระทงและลอยโคมขึ้นไปบนท้องฟ้า
2. เพื่อบูชาพระแม่คงคา เป็นการแสดงการขอบคุณน้ำ ระลึกว่าตลอดปีที่ผ่านมา เราได้อาศัยน้ำในการดำรงชีวิต เป็นการขอขมาและขอบคุณพระแม่คงคา ไม่ใช่เป็นการไหว้เทวดาพระแม่คงคา แต่เป็นการแสดงการขอบคุณน้ำ ในฐานะที่เป็นผู้ให้ชีวิตเรา
