ประวัติและความเป็นมาของ วัดโสธร จ.ฉะเชิงเทรา

วัดโสธรวรารามวรวิหาร เดิมมีชื่อว่า “วัดหงส์” มีหลักฐาน สร้างขึ้นตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาตอนปลาย โดยมีประวัติที่เล่าสืบทอดกันมายาวนาน และเมื่อเวลาผ่านไป แม่น้ำบางปะกงไหลกัดเซาะตลิ่งพังลงมา วัดหงส์จึงหมดไป จึงมีการสร้างวัดขึ้นใหม่

วัดโสธรวรารามวรวิหาร เป็นวัดเก่าแก่คู่บ้านคู่เมืองฉะเชิงเทรา เป็นที่ประดิษฐานหลวงพ่อพุทธโสธร พระพุทธรูปอันเป็นที่เคารพสักการะของชาวแปดริ้ว และคนต่างบ้านต่างเมืองมาแต่อดีตกาล ตั้งอยู่บนถนนสายมรุพงษ์ ห่างจากตลาดกลางเมืองประมาณ 2 กิโลเมตร

วัดนี้แต่เดิมเป็นวัดราษฎร์ สร้างขึ้นตอนปลายของกรุงศรีอยุธยา ตามประวัตินั้นแต่แรกมีชื่อว่า "วัดหงส์" เพราะมี "เสาหงส์" อยู่ในวัด เป็นเสาสูงมียอดเป็นตัวหงส์อยู่บนปลายเสา ต่อมาหงส์บนยอดเสาหักตกลงมาเหลือแต่เสา และมีผู้เอาธงขึ้นไปแขวนแทน จึงได้ชื่อว่า "วัดเสาธง" ครั้นเมื่อเสาธงหักเป็นสองท่อน จึงเรียกชื่อใหม่ว่า "วัดเสาธงทอน" ส่วนชื่อ "วัดโสธร" อันมีความหมายว่า "บริสุทธิ์" และ "ศักดิ์สิทธิ์" นั้น เรียกตามพระนามของพระพุทธโสธร หรือหลวงพ่อโสธรซึ่งได้มาประดิษฐานในวัดนี้
ในภายหลังวัดโสธรได้รับพระราชทานจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ยกขึ้นเป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นตรี ชนิดวรวิหาร มีนามว่า "วัดโสธรวรารามวรวิหาร" เมื่อวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม พ.ศ.2501
ความจริงวัดโสธรแห่งนี้สร้างขึ้นเมื่อปีใด ก็ไม่มีหลักฐานที่แน่นอน เพียงแต่ทราบว่าสร้างในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาตอนปลาย เท่านั้นเอง แล้วก็สร้างในสมัยเดียวกับหลวงพ่อบ้านแหลม ที่แม่กลองหรือสมุทรสงคราม ที่มีผู้คนบูชากราบไหว้ เพราะความศักดิ์สิทธิ์เช่นเดียวกัน
