พ.ศ. 2545 หน่วยปฎิบัติการวิจัยร่วมทางธรรมชาติวิทยาป่าพรุ และป่าดิบชื้นฮาลา-บาลา ภายใต้ความร่วมมือระหว่าง ศูนย์พันธุวิศวกรรมและเทคโนโลยีชีวภาพแห่งชาติ(ไบโอเทค) กรมอุทยานแห่งชาติสัตว์ป่าและพันธุ์พืช ค้นคว้าวิจัยและสำรวจเพื่อนำองค์ความรู้ไปขยายผลดำเนินการวิจัยต่อ เป็นการส่งเสริมงานวิจัยด้านชีวทรัพยากรธรรมชาติที่จำเป็นแก่การรักษาและใช้ประโยชน์ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติอย่างยั่งยืนในพื้นที่ที่สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี ทรงสนพระทัยและทรงงานวิจัยป่าพรุด้วยพระองค์เอง และทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯพระราชทานชื่อ "ศุนย์วิจัยและศึกษาธรรมชาติป่าพรุสิริธร" พ.ศ. 2534


ที่ตั้งของโครงการ : พื้นที่ดำเนินการอยู่บริเวณคลองโต๊ะแดง ฝั่งขวา ท้องที่บ้านโต๊ะแดง หมู่ที่ 5 ตำบลปูโย๊ะ อำเภอสุไหงโก-ลก จังหวัดนราธิวาส

วัตถุประสงค์โครงการ :
1. เพื่อศึกษา ค้นคว้า ทดลอง วิจัย และสำรวจหาข้อมูลทางวิชาการเกี่ยวกับป่าพรุมาใช้ในการ อนุรักษ์และฟื้นฟูทรัพยากรป่าพรุ
2. เพื่ออนุรักษ์ป่าพรุสมบูรณ์ตามธรรมชาติให้คงอยู่ตลอดไป และฟื้นฟูสภาพป่าพรุเสื่อมโทรมให้กลับคืนสู่สภาพป่าที่สมบูรณ์ดังเดิม
3. เพื่อสาธิตและเผยแพร่งานป่าพรุทั้งด้านการอนุรักษ์และการใช้ประโยชน์ทรัพยากรป่าพรุ
4. เพื่อเสริมสร้างจิตสำนึก และประชาสัมพันธ์ให้กับประชาชนได้ทราบ และตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของป่าพรุ

ศูนย์วิจัยและศึกษาธรรมชาติป่าพรุสิรินธร ภายใต้โครงการศูนย์ศึกษาการพัฒนาพิกุลทอง อันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริ จังหวัดนราธิวาส ซึ่งรับผิดชอบงานทางด้านป่าไม้ ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ป่าพรุโต๊ะแดง ทั้งหมด 125,625 ไร่ ได้ดำเนินการตั้งปี 2533 โดยกรมป่าไม้ ได้พิจารณาคัดเลือกพื้นที่พรุที่จะดำเนินการจัดตั้งสำนักงานบริเวณคลองโต๊ะแดง ท้องที่บ้านโต๊ะแดง ตำบลปูโย๊ ะ อำเภอสุไหงโก-ลก จังหวัดนราธิวาส ให้เป็นสถานที่สำหรับศึกษา ค้นคว้า หาความรู้ และความเพลิดเพลิน ในความหลากหลายของทรัพยากรป่าพรุธรรมชาติของประชาชนทั่วไป โดยใช้ชื่อว่า “ ศูนย์วิจัยและศึกษาธรรมชาติป่าพรุสิรินธร ” และในปี 2534 กระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์ได้พิจารณาคัดเลือก ให้ศูนย์แห่งนี้เป็นโครงการเฉลิมพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี ในวโรกาสที่ทรงเจริญพระชนมมายุ 36 พรรษา และต่อมาในปี 2535 ศูนย์ฯ แห่งนี้ได้รับพระราชทานพระราชานุญาตใช้ชื่อว่า “ศูนย์วิจัยและศึกษาธรรมชาติป่าพรุสิรินธร”
