1. เพื่อเป็นการป้องกันชีวิตของเราในภพชาติปัจจุบัน ไม่ให้ต้องพบกับความทุกข์ความเดือดร้อน และความเสื่อมเสียอันเนื่องมาจากการเบียดเบียนตนเองและผู้อื่น

2. เพื่อให้เกิดความสุข ความดีงาม ในการดำเนินชีวิต

3. เพื่อให้เกิดความสงบร่มเย็น และความดีงามแก่ครอบครัว และสังคม

4. เพื่อเป็นการป้องกันชีวิตของเราในภพชาติต่อไป ไม่ให้ต้องพบกับความทุกข์ ความเดือดร้อน และความเสื่อมเสียอันเนื่องมาจากการเบียดเบียนตนเอง และผู้อื่น

5. เพื่อเป็นพื้นฐานในการพัฒนาคุณธรรมที่สูงขึ้นไป ได้แก่ สมาธิ และปัญญา อันจะทำให้บรรลุ มรรคผลนิพพานได้
