จอมพล ถนอม กิตติขจร พ้นตำแหน่งนายกรัฐมนตรี เมื่อเกิดเหตุการณ์ 14 ตุลา พ.ศ. 2516 รัฐบาลได้ใช้อาวุธสงครามเข้าปราบปรามนักศึกษาประชาชนที่ชุมนุมเรียกร้องรัฐธรรมนูญ จนทำให้มีผู้เสียชีวิตเป็นจำนวนมาก จากเหตุการณ์นี้ ทำให้พลังทางการเมืองหลายฝ่ายกดดันให้จอมพลถนอมลาออกจากตำแหน่งนายกรัฐมนตรี รวมระยะเวลาที่ดำรงตำแหน่งนายกรัฐมนตรีโดยการยึดอำนาจและรัฐประหารทั้งสิ้น 10 ปี 6 เดือนเศษ หลังจากนั้น ได้มีการตั้งคณะกรรมการตรวจสอบทรัพย์สินของจอมพลถนอม จนนำไปสู่การยึดทรัพย์สินที่ได้มาโดยไม่สุจริตต้องเป็นจำนวนมาก

วันที่ 19 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2519 ท่ามกลางกระแสการปฏิวัติรัฐประหารของฝ่ายทหารทวีความรุนแรงอย่างกว้างขวาง จอมพลถนอมในวัย 65 ปี ได้กลับประเทศไทยอีกครั้งโดยบวชเป็นสามเณร ทำให้นักศึกษาประชาชนได้ออกมาประท้วงขับไล่อดีตนายกรัฐมนตรีมือเปื้อนเลือดรายนี้ เป็นเหตุให้กลุ่มการเมืองอีกฝ่ายที่นำโดย พลเรือเอก สงัด ชลออยู่ ฉวยโอกาสก่อรัฐประหารและทำการล้อมปราบนักศึกษาประชาชนในมหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ เมื่อวันที่ 6 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2519 ทำให้มีผู้บาดเจ็บ เสียชีวิต และสูญหายจำนวนมาก นำไปสู่การยกเลิกรัฐธรรมนูญ ยุติการปกครองแบบประชาธิปไตยรัฐสภา และทำให้ประเทศไทยอยู่ภายใต้เผด็จการทหารต่อมาเป็นเวลาปีเศษ
