พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงสอนให้ชาวไทยสามารถดำรงชีวิตด้วยตนเองได้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการพึ่งตนเอง ทั้งทางด้านจิตใจ ที่ต้องเข้มแข็ง มีจิตสำนึกที่ดี สร้างสรรค์ให้ตนเองและชาติโดยรวม ด้านสังคม ก็ต้องช่วยเหลือเกื้อกูลกัน เชื่อมโยงกันเป็นเครือข่ายชุมชนที่เข้มแข็งเป็น อิสระ หรือแม้กระทั่งด้านเศรษฐกิจที่ต้องมุ่งลดรายจ่ายเป็นสำคัญและยึดหลัก พอเพียง พอกิน พอใช้และสามารถอยู่ด้วยตนเองในระดับพื้นฐาน ดังพระราชดำรัสความตอนหนึ่งว่า

“..ยืนบนขาของตนเอง (ซึ่งแปลว่าพึ่งตนเอง) หมายความว่า สองขาของเรานี้ ยืนบนพื้นให้อยู่โดยไม่หกล้ม ไม่ต้องไปขอยืมขาของคนอื่นมาใช้สำหรับยืน..”
