ในปี ๒๕๕๔ เศรษฐกิจอินโดนีเซียเติบโตร้อยละ ๖.๕ อัตราการขยายตัวของอุตสาหกรรมยานยนต์ในปี ๒๕๕๔ จึงขยายตัวเพิ่มขึ้นร้อยละ ๑๐.๗ เมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับพ.ศ. ๒๕๕๓ รัฐบาลมีนโยบายส่งเสริม ห้ามนำเข้ารถยนต์สำเร็จรูป ให้นำเข้าเพียงชิ้นส่วนยานยนต์ เพื่อนำมาประกอบในอินโดนีเซียเท่านั้น อินโดนีเซียตั้งเป้าหมายที่จะแข่งขันกับไทย โดยมุ่งเป้าจะเป็นศูนย์กลางการผลิตรถยนต์ ในภูมิภาคแทนไทย แต่หากวิเคราะห์จะพบว่า การเพิ่มของอินโดนีเซียเป็นในลักษณะการเพิ่มยอดขายและการผลิตเพื่อสนองการบริโภคภายในประเทศเท่านั้น แต่ร้อยละ ๓๘ ของรถยนต์ที่ผลิตในไทยเป็นไปเพื่อการส่งออก
