คำว่า "ประวัติศาสตร์" เกิดจากการสมาสคำภาษาบาลี "ประวัติ" (ปวตฺติ) ซึ่งหมายถึง เรื่องราวความเป็นไป และคำภาษาสันสกฤต "ศาสตร์" (ศาสตร์) ซึ่งแปลว่า ความรู้
