ประวัติ

พระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้านวม กรมหลวงวงศาธิราชสนิท มีนามเดิมว่า พระองค์เจ้าชายนวม ประสูติแต่เจ้าจอมมารดาปรางใหญ่ ธิดาท่านขรัวยายทองอิน เมื่อวันเสาร์ เดือน 8 แรม 2 ค่ำ ปีมะโรง สัมฤทธิศก จ.ศ. 1170 ตรงกับวันที่ 9 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2351 ทรงได้รับการศึกษาเบื้องต้นตามแบบฉบับของราชสำนักและผนวชเป็นสามเณร ได้รับการศึกษาในสำนักสมเด็จพระมหาสมณเจ้ากรมพระปรมานุชิตชิโนรส ในวัดพระเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาราม ทรงได้รับการถ่ายทอดวิชาความรู้ด้านอักษรศาสตร์ ทั้งอักขรวิธีภาษาไทย ขอม และมคธ รวมทั้งวรรณคดี วิชาโบราณคดีและราชประเพณี
ต่อมาทรงเข้ารับราชการในรัชกาลพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงกำกับกรมหมอหลวง และทรงศึกษาวิชาการแพทย์สมัยใหม่จากมิชชันนารีอเมริกัน โปรดเกล้าฯสถาปนาขึ้นเป็น กรมหมื่นวงศาสนิท เมื่อครั้นปี พ.ศ. 2392 พระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวมีพระราชปรารภ ถึงความเสื่อมโทรมของภาษาไทย จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯให้พระองค์เจ้านวม ทรงแต่งตำราภาษาไทยขึ้นใหม่ เพื่ออนุรักษ์ภาษาไทย พระนิพนธ์เรื่อง “จินดามณี เล่ม 2” ซึ่งทรงดัดแปลงจากตำราเดิมสมัยอยุธยา อธิบายหลักเกณฑ์ภาษาไทยให้เข้าใจง่ายกว่าเดิม ต่อมาในรัชกาลพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โปรดเกล้าฯเลื่อนขึ้นเป็น กรมหลวงวงศาธิราชสนิท ทรงกำกับราชการมหาดไทย ว่าพระคลังสินค้า และเป็นที่ปรึกษาราชการแผ่นดิน ทรงเป็นเจ้านายหนึ่งในสี่พระองค์ ที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงหมายจะให้สืบราชบัลลังก์ต่อจากพระองค์
พระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมหลวงวงศาธิราชสนิท สิ้นพระชนม์ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 เมื่อวันพุธ เดือน 10 ขึ้น 6 ค่ำ ปีมะเมียโทศก ตรงกับวันที่ 14 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2414 พระชันษา 63 พรรษา พระราชทานเพลิงพระศพ ณ วัดอรุณราชวราราม เมื่อวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2414
