The Assessment of Equivalence of Qualification is intended for overseas qualified physiotherapists who hold qualifications that may be considered equivalent to an accredited Australian entry level qualification. Who can apply for an Assessment of Equivalence?
Any overseas qualified physiotherapist can apply. The assessment is based on individual applications.

How long will the Assessment of Equivalence take?
The assessment takes up to 6 weeks from the date the Australian Physiotherapy Council receives your correctly completed application form and all required documents in the correct format.

What are the possible outcomes of the Assessment of Equivalence?
If your application is successfully deemed as equivalent you will be issued with an APC 'Certificate of Substantial Equivalence', which will meet one of the requirements for General Registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia.

If your application is not successful you will be approved to move onto the Written Stage, of the Three Part Assessment for Registration process, bypassing the Initial Assessment stage.

Everything you need to provide is listed in the Assessment of Equivalence of Qualification application form. You must strongly read the list of criteria before applying. If you are not confident you will reach every requirement, you should not apply, and should choose the APC Three Part process instead.

What are the eligible duration of programs?
The assessment is based on the standards of accreditation for Australian programs. Australian entry level Bachelor programs are four years in length. Masters entry level programs are two years in length, and Doctoral programs are a minimum of three years.

Your program should therefore be at least the equivalent length of the above. If your Bachelor program is only three years in length, you will not qualify for this assessment.

Can the APC tell me exactly whether certain information and documents will reach the assessment criteria?
All Assessment of Equivalence applications are assessed by an external independent assessor. For this reason the APC cannot advise you whether certain documents and information will reach the criteria.

What happens if my University Program and Cohort has already been assessed and deemed Equivalent?
If your University Program and Cohort has been already been assessed and deemed equivalent you can therefore apply directly for a 'Certificate of Substantial Equivalence', without having to go through the new assessment process. You can find a copy of the application form here.

Please note your cohort must commence and complete in the exact same years as listed on the Equivalent University Program list.

What happens if my University Program and Cohort has already been assessed and deemed Non-Equivalent?
If your University Program and Cohorts has already been assessed and deemed non-equivalent, you will not qualify for the Assessment of Equivalence and should not submit a new application.

What if I graduated over 10 years ago? Would my University program still have a chance of being deemed equivalent?
Programs which were completed prior to 2005 may have difficulty demonstrating sufficient evidence since the University does not always maintain records for an extended period of time.

It is also possible that programs completed prior to 2005 may have insufficient evidence related to evidence based practice across the scope of the academic and clinical programs.

Universities may have adequate documentation describing quality processes however they do not always have evidence of data collection and analysis.

Whilst program attributes, including duration, is one of the standards, the qualifications from India do not meet many of the other standards required for accreditation of programs in Australia. The basic reason is that the context of practice for a new graduate in India is completely different to that of a new graduate in Australia. Therefore the program pedagogy, content, quality systems and other aspects do not meet the Australian Standards. Graduates from Indian programs have successfully completed the APC Three Part Assessment process.

My Masters Degree is from an United Kingdom University, will it be eligible?
A Masters entry level program from the UK which is two years duration clearly meets the duration requirements however the content may not satisfy the relevant criteria if the program is an abbreviated version of the UK three year program.
