ระบำทวารวดี เป็นระบำชุดที่ ๑ ในระบำโบราณคดีที่เกิดขึ้นจากแนวความคิดของนายธนิต อยู่โพธิ์ (อดีตอธิบดีกรมศิลปากร)    ซึ่งต้องการศึกษา และเรียนรู้เรื่องเครื่องแต่งกายของมนุษย์ เพื่อประโยชน์แก่วิชาประวัตศาสตร์ และโบราณคดี โดยทูลขอร้องให้หม่อมเจ้ายาใจ จิตรพงศ์ ซึ่งขณะนั้นดำรงตำแหน่งสถาปนิกพิเศษของกรมศิลปากร ทางศึกษาแบบอย่าง และเขียนเลียนแบบเครื่องแต่งการสมัยทวารวดีบางรูป โดยในครั้งแรกคิดจะจัดสร้างเครื่องแต่งกายตามสมัยโบราณคดี ถวายทอดพระเนตรในงานเสด็จพระราชดำเนินทรงเปิดการแสดงศิลปะโบราณวัตถุในอาคาร สร้างใหม่ ในพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ พระนคร แต่หลังจากได้ภาพตามต้องการแล้ว จึงเปลี่ยนแนวความคิดใหม่ในการจัดแสดงระบำโบราณคดีชุดต่าง ๆ ถวายพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช และสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ทอดพระเนตรแทนการจัดแสดงเครื่องแต่งกาย
