ประวัติสำนักหอสมุด

สำนักหอสมุด มหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ เดิมมีชื่อเรียกว่า ห้องสมุดวิทยาลัยไทยเทคนิค เริ่มก่อตั้งขึ้นพร้อมกับการก่อตั้งวิทยาลัยไทยเทคนิคในปี พ.ศ. 2505 ต่อมาเมื่อมีการเปลี่ยนชื่อเรียกสถาบันจากวิทยาลัยไทยเทคนิค เป็นวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ ห้องสมุดจึงได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น แผนกห้องสมุดวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ

ระยะแรกของการเปิดดำเนินการนั้น ห้องสมุดตั้งอยู่ ณ อาคาร 1 ชั้น 1 วิทยาเขตกล้วยน้ำไท มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 3 ห้องเรียน เมื่อได้มีการขยายพื้นที่ตามจำนวนนักศึกษาและคณาจารย์ที่เพิ่มมากขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง ในปี พ.ศ. 2509 ห้องสมุดได้ย้ายที่ทำการมา ณ อาคาร 2 (อาคาร สวัสดิ์-ล้อม) และขยายเพิ่มอีกเป็นขนาด 4 ห้องเรียน

ปี พ.ศ. 2519 มีการต่อเติมอาคารสวัสดิ์-ล้อม ห้องสมุดได้ย้ายไปให้บริการเป็นการชั่วคราว ณ อาคาร 4 และได้ย้ายที่ทำการไปยังอาคาร 3 โดยใช้พื้นที่ชั้น 4 ตลอดชั้นเป็นที่ทำการของห้องสมุด และเมื่อการต่อเติมอาคารสวัสดิ์-ล้อม แล้วเสร็จในปี พ.ศ. 2521 ห้องสมุดจึงย้ายกลับมา ณ อาคาร 2 ตามเดิม โดยมีพื้นที่เพิ่มขึ้นเป็นประมาณ 8 ห้องเรียน

ต่อมาปี พ.ศ. 2526 ห้องสมุดได้ยกฐานะเป็น แผนกห้องสมุด สังกัดฝ่ายวิชาการ

ปี พ.ศ. 2527 คณะกรรมการสถาบันอุดมศึกษาเอกชนมีมติให้วิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ เปลี่ยนสถานะเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ แผนกห้องสมุดจึงยกฐานะเป็น แผนกห้องสมุด มหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ

ปี พ.ศ. 2528 ห้องสมุดได้ยกฐานะจาก แผนกห้องสมุด เป็น สำนักหอสมุดกลาง โดยแบ่งงานภายในออกเป็น 2 แผนก คือ แผนกส่งเสริมและพัฒนา และแผนกบริการสารนิเทศ

ปี พ.ศ. 2529 มหาวิทยาลัยได้เปิดการเรียนการสอนที่วิทยาเขตรังสิต สำนักหอสมุดกลาง จึงได้ตั้ง แผนกห้องสมุดรังสิต โดยเปิดบริการที่บริเวณชั้น 2 อาคาร 1 อาคาร 2 และอาคาร 3 และย้ายสังกัดจากฝ่ายวิชาการ มาสังกัดสายวางแผนและพัฒนา

ปี พ.ศ. 2532 สำนักหอสมุดกลาง วิทยาเขตกล้วยน้ำไท ได้ย้ายจากอาคาร 2 มาที่อาคาร 5 ชั้น 2 และชั้น 3

ปี พ.ศ. 2533 ได้จัดตั้ง ห้องสมุดกฎหมายพระยามานวราชเสวี ขึ้น ณ วิทยาเขตกล้วยน้ำไท เพื่อเป็นแหล่งรวบรวมหนังสือหายากและผลงานที่มีคุณค่าทางด้านกฎหมาย ประมาณ 833 ชื่อ ซึ่งพระยามานวราชเสวีอดีตนายกสภามหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ ได้มอบไว้ให้แก่สำนักหอสมุดกลาง เพื่อเก็บรักษาและให้บริการ และในปีเดียวกัน สำนักหอสมุดกลางได้เริ่มนำเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศมาใช้ในการบริหารจัดการด้วยระบบทำงานผ่านเครือข่ายคอมพิวเตอร์ (Local Area Network : LAN) เพื่อพัฒนาระบบทำงานของสำนักหอสมุดกลาง โดยพัฒนาระบบ OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) เพื่อจัดการทรัพยากรสารสนเทศและนำมาให้บริการแทนระบบการค้นคว้าด้วยบัตรรายการ และมีการพัฒนาระบบฐานข้อมูลอย่างต่อเนื่องจนเป็นระบบ BU-Cat ในปัจจุบัน

ปี พ.ศ. 2535 สำนักหอสมุดกลางได้ย้ายที่ทำการมาตั้งที่ชั้น 2 อาคาร 5 มีพื้นที่ 3,996.80 ตารางเมตรมีที่นั่งอ่านหนังสือ 2,018 ที่นั่ง สำหรับให้บริการแก่นักศึกษาที่วิทยาเขตกล้วยน้ำไท และในต้นปี พ.ศ. 2536 สำนักหอสมุดกลาง วิทยาเขตกล้วยน้ำไท ได้ขยายพื้นที่เพิ่มขึ้นไปบนชั้น 3 อาคาร 5 โดยมีพื้นที่เพิ่มขึ้นอีกประมาณ 1,500 ตารางเมตร และมีที่นั่งอ่านหนังสือเพิ่มขึ้นอีกกว่า 1,000 ที่นั่ง รวมทั้งได้แบ่งงานออกเป็น 6 แผนก ได้แก่ แผนกส่งเสริมและพัฒนาทรัพยากร แผนกวิเคราะห์สารนิเทศ แผนกบริการสารนิเทศ แผนกห้องสมุดรังสิต แผนกบริการค้นคว้าและวิจัย และแผนกระบบสารสนเทศและเทคโนโลยี

ปี พ.ศ. 2538 สำนักหอสมุดกลางได้เริ่มเปลี่ยนแปลงระบบการจัดหมวดหมู่หนังสือจากเดิม ระบบทศนิยมของดิวอี้ (Dewey Decimal Classification) มาเป็นระบบหอสมุดรัฐสภาอเมริกัน (Library of Congress Classification)

ปี พ.ศ. 2543 ได้มีการย้ายแผนกระบบสารสนเทศและเทคโนโลยี ไปสังกัดศูนย์คอมพิวเตอร์ แต่ยังมีหน้าที่ดูแลระบบฐานข้อมูลของห้องสมุดเช่นเดิม สำนักหอสมุดกลางจึงมีหน่วยงานในสังกัด 5 แผนก และในปีเดียวกันนี้ มหาวิทยาลัยได้เริ่มทำการก่อสร้างอาคารหอสมุดสุรัตน์ โอสถานุเคราะห์ ณ วิทยาเขตรังสิต ภายใต้วัตถุประสงค์ที่ต้องการให้เป็นศูนย์บริการทางเทคโนโลยีการศึกษาและพัฒนาไปสู่การให้บริการห้องสมุดอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (Electronic Library) โดยปรับเปลี่ยนห้องสมุดมาเป็นศูนย์การเรียนรู้ การค้นคว้าและวิจัย (Learning and Research Center) และในเดือนธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2544 แผนกห้องสมุดรังสิต ได้ทำการย้ายจากบริเวณ ชั้นที่ 2 ของอาคาร 1 อาคาร 2 และอาคาร 3 มาอยู่ ณ อาคารหอสมุดสุรัตน์ โอสถานุเคราะห์ วิทยาเขตรังสิต รวมถึง ผู้อำนวยการสำนักหอสมุดกลาง แผนกส่งเสริมและพัฒนาทรัพยากร และ แผนกวิเคราะห์สารนิเทศ ได้ย้ายจากวิทยาเขตกล้วยน้ำไท มาทำการที่อาคารหอสมุดสุรัตน์ โอสถานุเคราะห์ วิทยาเขตรังสิต



ปี พ.ศ. 2545 สำนักหอสมุดกลางเริ่มเปิดให้บริการ ณ อาคารหอสมุดสุรัตน์ ในวันที่ 16 มกราคม และต่อมาก็ได้มีการเปลี่ยนชื่อหน่วยงานจาก สำนักหอสมุดกลาง เป็น สำนักหอสมุด แผนกบริการสารนิเทศ เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น แผนกบริการสารนิเทศกล้วยน้ำไท และ แผนกห้องสมุดรังสิต เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น แผนกบริการสารนิเทศรังสิต สำหรับวิทยาเขตกล้วยน้ำไทยังคงให้บริการที่อาคาร 5 เช่นเดิม
