ประวัติความเป็นมาของพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม
โครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม ก่อตั้งเมื่อวันที่ 1 มิถุนายน พ.ศ.2542 โดยมีความมุ่งหมายเพื่อสื่อสารถึงอัตลักษณ์ของมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม ที่มีจุดเริ่มต้นและพัฒนาการอย่างมีความหมายและความสำคัญควบคู่มากับ พัฒนาการ ของสังคม รวมทั้งเป็นศูนย์กลางแห่งการพัฒนาองค์ความรู้ด้านพิพิธภัณฑ์เพื่อส่งเสริม ให้สังคมได้รับผลประโยชน์จากกิจการพิพิธภัณฑ์ ทั้งในด้านการปลูกจิตสำนึกแห่งคุณค่าและความสำคัญของท้องถิ่น การจัดการพิพิธภัณฑ์ให้เป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้ที่ตอบสนองต่อความต้องการของสังคม
นอกจากนี้ โครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคามยังทำหน้าที่สนับสนุนการ จัดการเรียนการสอน การวิจัย และบริการวิชาการด้านพิพิธภัณฑ์ตลอดจนเป็นสถานที่สำหรับการพักผ่อนและจัด กิจกรรมสำหรับคณาจารย์ นิสิต และบุคคลทั่วไป


ผศ.ดร.ทวีศิลป์ สืบวัฒนะ ประธานโครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัย มหาสารคามได้มีดำริที่จะจัดตั้งสวนสัตว์ขนาดเล็กบนพื้นที่โดยรอบบริเวณ โครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม ทั้งนี้ด้วยความร่วมมือกับสวนสัตว์นครราชสีมาองค์กร สวนสัตว์ในพระบรามราชูปถัมภ์กระทรวงทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม ในส่วนของสถานีศึกษาสัตว์จะมีสัตว์อยู่หลายชนิด อาทิเช่น กวางลูซ่า, ละมั่ง, เนื้อทราย, กวางดาว, นกยูง, นกแก้วมาคอร์ และยังมีสัตว์อื่นๆอีกในโครงการ เพื่อใช้เป็นแหล่งพักผ่อนหย่อนใจ สนับสนุนการศึกษาวิจัย และการเรียนการสอนของมหาวิทยาลัย และบุคคลทั่วไปรวมทั้งส่งเสริมให้ชุมชน สามารถสร้างประโยชน์ในเชิงเศรษฐกิจจากการเพาะเลี้ยงและขยายพันธุ์สัตว์บางประเภทด้วย
โครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคามตั้งในพื้นที่ของมหาวิทยาลัย มหาสารคามตำบลขามเรียง อำเภอกันทรวิชัย จังหวัดมหาสารคาม โดยตั้งอยู่บริเวณด้านทิศตะวันออกของอาคารบรมราชกุมารี (สำนักอธิการบดี)
ที่ตั้งโครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม ภายในพื้นที่โครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคามได้แบ่งพื้นที่ใช้สอยออกเป็น 8 ส่วน ดังนี้
1. เรือนอีสานประยุกต์หลังใหญ่ ประกอบด้วย สำนักงาน ห้องประชุมใหญ่ ห้องประชุมย่อย ห้องรับรอง คลังพิพิธภัณฑ์ หอจดหมายเหตุมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม และนิทรรศการพัฒนาการมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม
2. เรือนอีสานประยุกต์หลังเล็ก ประกอบด้วยนิทรรศการพัฒนาการมหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม และพื้นที่สำหรับจัดนิทรรศการหมุนเวียน
