Round และ อุทัย ตรีสุคนธ์ [1] โดยพบ 44-45 คู่ แต่ในปี พ.ศ. 2540 เหลือเพียง 9 คู่เท่านั้น ปัจจุบันคาดว่ามีอยู่ประมาณ 13-20 คู่เท่านั้น จึงถูกให้เป็นสัตว์ป่าสงวน 15 ชนิดของไทย ตามพระราชบัญญัติสงวนและคุ้มครองสัตว์ป่า พ.ศ. 2535 ซึ่ง IUCN เคยประเมินสถานภาพให้อยู่ในระดับใกล้สูญพันธุ์อย่างยิ่ง (CE) แต่จากการที่การสำรวจพบประชากรของนกชนิดนี้ในประเทศพม่ามากขึ้น ในปี พ.ศ. 2551 จึงปรับสถานภาพให้ดีขึ้นเล็กน้อยเป็นใกล้สูญพันธุ์ (EN)
