ประเทศไทยได้เข้าเป็นสมาชิกองค์การสหประชาชาติเมื่อ1946 ต่อมาในปี 2493 เกิดสงครามเกาหลี โดยเกาหลีเหนือได้รับการสนับสนุนจากสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนกับสหภาพโซเวียตได้เคลื่อนกำลังทหารเข้ารุกรานเกาหลีใต้ องค์กรสหประชาชาติภายใต้ฟการนำของผสหรัฐรัฐอเมริกาจึงส่งทหารเข้าไปปกป้องเกาหลีใต้ รัฐบาลไทยจึงส่งกำลังทหารเข้าร่วมรบในสงครามเข้าหลีด้วย
