อาณาจักรตามพรลิงค์ ถือเป็นแคว้นที่เก่าที่สุดแคว้นหนึ่งบนแหลมมลายู ก่อตั้งและมีความเจริญติดต่อกันมาหลายสมัยตั้งแต่ประมาณพุทธศตวรรษที่ ๗ ครั้นในพุทธศตวรรษที่ ๑๘ เมืองตามพรลิงค์ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น นครศรีธรรมราช และราวต้นพุทธศตวรรษที่ ๑๙ มีอิทธิพลครอบคลุมบรรดาหัวเมืองและแว่นแคว้นอื่น ๆ ทั่วแหลมมลายู แต่ภายหลังได้ตกอยู่ภายใต้อิทธิพลของอาณาจักรสุโขทัย และต่อมาถูกรวมเข้ากับอาณาจักรอยุธยาตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. ๑๘๙๓ คำว่า "ตามพ" เป็นภาษาบาลี แปลว่า ทองแดง ส่วน "ลิงค์" เป็นเครื่องหมายบอกเพศ เขียนเป็นอักษรภาษาอังกฤษว่า Tambalinga หรือ Tanmaling หรือ Tamballinggam จีนเรียก ตันเหมยหลิง หรือโพ-ลิง หรือโฮลิง(แปลว่าหัวแดง) บางทีเรียกว่า เชียะโท้ว(แปลว่าดินแดง) อาณาจักรตามพรลิงค์ มีกษัตริย์สำคัญคือ พระเจ้าศรีธรรมาโศกราช และ พระเจ้าจันทรภาณุศรีธรรมราช

ในช่วงที่อาณาจักรนครศรีธรรมราชมีความเจริญรุ่งเรืองอยู่นั้น ได้กลายเป็นศูนย์กลางการเผยแพร่พระพุทธศาสนาบนคาบสมุทรมลายู ทั้งนี้โดยมีการติดต่อสัมพันธ์กับลังกาและยอมรับนับถือพระพุทธศาสนานิกายเถรวาทลัทธิลังกาวงศ์ ภายหลังพระภิกษุสงฆ์จากนครศรี -ธรรมราชก็ได้พระพุทธศาสนานิกายนึ้ขึ้นไปเผยแพร่ยังกรุงสุโขทัยด้วยเมื่อประมาณ พ.ศ. ๑๘๐๐ อันเป็นผลให้พระพุทธศาสนานิกายเถรวาทได้ฝังรากลึกลงในสังคมไทยนับตั้งแต่บัดนั้นเป็นต้นมา
