วัดโพธิ์ หรือนามทางราชการว่า วัดพระเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาราม ราชวรมหาวิหาร เป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นเอก และเป็นวัดประจำรัชกาลที่ ๑ แห่งราชวงศ์จักรี เนื่องจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สถาปนาวัดโพธารามวัดเก่าที่เมืองบางกอกครั้งกรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นวัดหลวงข้างพระบรมมหาราชวัง และที่ใต้พระแท่นประดิษฐาน พระพุทธเทวปฏิมากร พระประธานในพระอุโบสถเป็นที่บรรจุพระบรมอัฐิของพระองค์ท่านไว้ด้วย

ครั้นรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ ๓ ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้บูรณปฏิสังขรณ์ครั้งใหญ่ นานถึง ๑๖ ปี ๗ เดือน ขยายเขตพระอารามด้านใต้และตะวันตก คือ ส่วนที่เป็นพระวิหารพระพุทธไสยาส สวนมิสกวัน สถาปนาขึ้นใหม่ พระมณฑป ศาลาการเปรียญ และสระจระเข้บูรณปฏิสังขรณ์ใหม่เป็นโบราณสถานในพระอารามหลวง ที่ปรากฏอยู่ทุกวันนี้ แม้การบูรณปฏิสังขรณ์ครั้งล่าสุดเมื่อฉลองกรุงเทพฯ ๒๐๐ ปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๕ เป็นเพียงซ่อมสร้างของเก่าให้ดีขึ้น มิได้สร้างเสริมสิ่งใดๆ
