นายวิบูลย์ทัต สุทันธนกิตติ์ ผู้อำนวยการสำนักงานสถิติแห่งชาติ เปิดเผยว่า ผลสำรวจพฤติกรรมการสูบบุหรี่และการดื่มสุราของคนไทยในปีที่ผ่านมา จากประชากรอายุ 15 ปีขึ้นไป พบว่ามีแนวโน้มเพิ่มขึ้นจากปีที่ผ่านมา เป็นผู้สูบบุหรี่ประมาณ 11 ล้านคน โดยกลุ่มวัยทำงานอายุ 25 - 59 ปี จะสูบบุหรี่มากที่สุด รองลงมาเป็นผู้สูงอายุ 60 ปีขึ้นไป และกลุ่มเยาวชนที่อายุ 15 - 24 ปี โดยผู้ชายจะสูบบุหรี่มากกว่าผู้หญิง 18 เท่า ในปีที่ผ่านมายังพบว่า มีอัตราการสูบบุหรี่เพิ่มขึ้นอีกร้อยละ 20 และมีแนวโน้มว่าเยาวชนเริ่มสูบบุหรี่ตั้งแต่อายุน้อยลง โดยมีค่าใช้จ่ายประจำเพื่อซื้อบุหรี่เฉลี่ยประมาณเดือนละ 423 บาท

ส่วนการดื่มสุรา พบว่า มีผู้ดื่มสุราประมาณ 17 ล้านคน หรือร้อยละ 32 โดยผู้ชายมีการดื่มสุรามากกว่าผู้หญิงประมาณ 4 เท่า และกลุ่มวัยทำงานอายุ 25 - 59 ปี มีสัดส่วนการดื่มสุราสูงที่สุด และกลุ่มผู้สูงวัยที่ยังดื่มสุรามีมากถึงร้อยละ 18 สำหรับเหตุผลในการดื่มสุรา อันดับหนึ่ง คือ เพื่อเข้าสังคม การสังสรรค์ รองลงมาเพื่อนชวนดื่ม และอยากทดลองดื่ม โดยอายุที่เริ่มดื่มสุราครั้งแรกเฉลี่ย 20 ปี
