กฎหมายสมัยกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ในสมัยนั

ครั้นในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้ทรงจัดวางระบบศาลขึ้นมาใหม่ และได้ให้ผู้เชี่ยวชาญทางกฎหมายทั้งจากอังกฤษ ฝรั่งเศส เบลเยี่ยม ญี่ปุ่น และลังกามาเป็นที่ปรึกษากฎหมาย และในสมัยนั้นพระราชโอรสของพระองค์ที่ได้ทรงให้ไปศึกษาด้านกฎหมายคือ พระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอกรมหลวงราชบุรีดิเรกฤทธิ์ ก็ได้ร่วมกันแก้ไขชำระกฎหมายตราสามดวงเดิมขึ้นใหม่ และจัดพิมพ์ลงในหนังสือเป็นรูปเล่ม ขึ้นในชื่อของ ‘กฎหมายราชบุรี’ ในปีพ.ศ. ๒๔๔๐ และในการนี้เองพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวได้ทรงแต่งตั้งคณะกรรมการตรวจชำระและร่างกฎหมายขึ้นมาใหม่ ทำการร่างกฎหมายลักษณะอาญา ร่างกฎหมายว่าด้วยการเลิกทาส กฎหมายวิธีสบัญยัติ ร่างประมวลกฎหมายแพ่งและกฎหมายที่สำคัญหลายๆฉบับ จนพระบรมวงค์เธอกรมหลวงราชบุรีดิเรกฤทธิ์หรือพระองค์เจ้ารพีพัฒนศักดิ์ ได้รับพระราชทินนามว่าเป็นพระบิดาแห่งกฎหมายไทย และกำหนดให้วันที่ ๗ เดือนสิงหาคมของทุกปีเป็นวันรพี
