ประเทศไทยเป็นประเทศที่ 17 ของโลกที่เป็นสมาชิกของ "สหพันธ์เปตองนานาชาติ" ผู้นำกีฬาเปตองเข้ามาเผยแพร่ในประเทศไทยให้เป็นที่รู้จัก และเป็นทางการคนแรก คือ อาจารย์จันทร์ โพยหาญ เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2519 และต่อมาได้มีคณะรณรงค์เผยแพร่กีฬาเปตอง คือ นายศรีภูมิ สุขเนตร (นักเรียนเก่าฝรั่งเศส) ซึ่งมีความรู้ความสามารถในการเล่นกีฬาเปตอง พร้อมด้วยนายชัยรัตน์ คำนวน และนายดนัย ตรีทัศนถาวร และต่อมาก็ได้ร่วมกันก่อตั้ง "สมาคมเปตองแห่งประเทศไทย" เมื่อวันที่ 18 มิถุนายน 2519 ปัจจุบันได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น "สหพันธ์เปตองแห่งประเทศไทย" โดยมี นายศรีภูมิ นุขเนตร เป็นนายกสมาคมคนแรก
