ประวัติ
กีฬาวอลเลย์บอลถือกำเนิดขึ้นในปี ค.ศ. 1896 โดยนายวิลเลียม จี. มอร์แกน ผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายพลศึกษาของสมาคม Y.M.C.A. เมืองฮอลโยค รัฐแมสซาชูเซตส์ ประเทศอเมริกา ซึ่งได้เกิดขึ้นเพียง 1 ปี ก่อนการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิกสมัยใหม่ ครั้งที่ 1 ณ กรุงเอเธนส์ โดยเขามีความคิดที่ต้องการให้มีกีฬาสำหรับเล่นในช่วงฤดูหนาวแทนกีฬากลางแจ้งเพื่อออกกำลังกายพักผ่อนหย่อนใจยามหิมะ

การเข้ามาในประเทศไทย
วอลเลย์บอลได้แพร่เข้ามาในประเทศไทยตั้งแต่ช่วงไหนนั้นยังไม่มีหลักฐานแน่ชัดแต่ชาวไทยบางกลุ่มเริ่มเล่นและแข่งขันวอลเลย์บอลในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง ปี พ.ศ. 2477 กรมพลศึกษาได้จัดพิมพ์กติกาเผยแพร่โดยอาจารย์นพคุณ พงษ์สุวรรณซึ่งจัดให้มีการแข่งขันกีฬาประจำปีและบรรจุกีฬาวอลเลย์บอลหญิงเข้าไว้ในรายการแข่งขันเป็นครั้งแรกโดยใช้กติกาการเล่นระบบ9คนและตั้งแต่นั้นมากีฬาวอลเลย์บอลก็พัฒนาขึ้นมาโดยตลอดจนกระทั่งเมื่อวันที่ 1 พฤศจิกายน 2500 ได้มีการจัดตั้งสมาคมวอลเลย์บอลสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย (Amature Volleyball Association of Thailand) ขึ้นและเปลี่ยนระบบการแข่งขันเป็น 6 คน และได้บรรจุเข้าในหลักสูตรชั้นมัธยมศึกษาตอนต้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2521 หลักสูตรชั้นมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายเมื่อปี 2524
