การศึกษาแนวโน้มของการวิจัยสำหรับประเทศไทยนั้น นอกจากประเด็นปัญหาที่เป็นปัจจุบันแล้ว สามารถสำรวจได้จากการทำวิจัยของนักศึกษาระดับปริญญาโท และเอกในสาขาเทคโนโลยีการศึกษา จากมหาวิทยาลัยทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศศึกษาได้ จากบทความที่ตีพิมพ์ในวารสารวิชาการทางด้านเทคโนโลยีการศึกษา และวารสารที่เกี่ยวข้อง รวมทั้งศึกษาได้จากหัวข้อการจัดสัมมนาและการประชุมทางวิชาการในประเทศไทย และบทความหรืองานวิจัยที่ได้รับการคัดเลือกให้นำเสนอในที่ประชุมทางวิชาการนั้น จากการศึกษาดังกล่าวพบว่าแนวโน้มของการวิจัยทางด้านเทคโนโลยีการศึกษามีดังนี้
1. การวิจัยจะเกี่ยวข้องกับการใช้เทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศเพื่อการศึกษา เช่น ระบบมัลติมีเดีย,Web based Learning,E-learning และ Virtual Classroom ซึ่งเป็นการนำเทคโนโลยีคอมพิวเตอร์ และระบบสารสนเทศมาใช้ ทั้งระบบที่มีการเชื่อมต่อด้วยสายนำสัญญาณ และแบบไม่มีสายหรือ Handheld and Wireless Technology
