ประวัติ
สะพานข้ามแม่น้ำแควเป็นสถานที่ทางประวัติศาสตร์ที่สำคัญยิ่งแห่งหนึ่ง เป็นสะพานที่สำคัญที่สุดของเส้นทางรถไฟสายมรณะ สร้างขึ้นสมัยสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 โดยกองทัพญี่ปุ่นได้เกณฑ์เชลยศึกฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตร ได้แก่ ทหารอังกฤษ อเมริกัน ออสเตรเลีย ฮอลันดา และนิวซีแลนด์ประมาณ 61,700 คน สมทบด้วยกรรมกรชาวจีน ญวน ชวา มลายู ไทย พม่า และอินเดีย อีกจำนวนมาก มาก่อสร้างทางรถไฟสายยุทธศาสตร์ เพื่อเป็นเส้นทางผ่านไปสู่ประเทศพม่า ซึ่งเส้นทางช่วงหนึ่งจะต้องข้ามแม่น้ำแควใหญ่ จึงต้องมีการสร้างสะพานขึ้น การสร้างสะพานและทางรถไฟสายนี้ เต็มไปด้วยความยากลำบาก ความทารุณของสงครามและโรคภัย ตลอดจนการขาดแคลนอาหาร ทำให้เชลยศึกหลายหมื่นคนต้องเสียชีวิตลง
