สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราช เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิราลงกรณ สยามมกุฎราชกุมาร ทรงได้รับการศึกษาระดับอนุบาลศึกษาที่พระที่นั่งอุดร พระราชวังดุสิต และทรงเข้ารับการศึกษาระดับประถมศึกษาและระดับมัธยมศึกษา โรงเรียนจิตรลดา ระหว่างพุทธศักราช ๒๔๙๙ –๒๕๐๕ ที่ประเทศอังกฤษระหว่างพุทธศักราช ๒๕๐๙ – ๒๕๑๓ หลังจากนั้นได้ทรงศึกษาระดับเตรียมทหารที่โรงเรียนคิงส์ นครซิดนี่ย์ ประเทศออสเตรเลีย แล้วเข้ารับการศึกษาระดับอุดมศึกษา ทรงได้รับปริญญาอักษรศาสตร์บัณฑิต (การศึกษาด้านทหาร)คณะการศึกษาด้านทหาร จากมหาวิทยาลัยนิวเซาเวลล์ ประเทศออสเตรเลีย เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๙ นอกจากนี้ ยังทรงศึกษาที่โรงเรียนเสนาธิการทหารบกหลักสูตรประจำชุดที่ ๕-๖ ระหว่าง พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๐ – ๒๕๒๑ และทรงได้รับปริญญานิติศาสตร์บัณฑิต มหาวิทยาลัยสุโขทัยธรรมาธิราช เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๕๓๐ ครั้งถึง พ.ศ.๒๕๓๓ ทรงได้รับการศึกษา ณ วิทยาลัยป้องกันราชอาณาจักรแห่งสหราชอาณาจักรด้วย

ในมงคลวาระนั้น สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราชฯ สยามมกุฎราชกุมาร ได้ถวายสัตย์ปฎิญาณในการพิธีถือน้ำพิพัฒน์สัตยา ณ พระอุโบสถวัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม ซึ่งแสดงถึงน้ำพระราชหฤทัยที่ทรงมุ่งมั่นจะบำเพ็ญพระราชกรณียกิจ เพื่อชาติบ้านเมือง และประชาชนชาวไทย เป็นที่ซาบซึ้งประทับใจพสกนิกรอย่างยิ่ง ดังความว่า

“ข้าพระพุทธเจ้าขอพระราชทานกระทำสัตย์ปฎิญาณสาบานต่อประเทศชาติและประชาชนชาวไทยเฉพาะพระพุทธ พระธรรม พระสงค์ เฉพาะพระพุทธมหามณีรัตนปฎิมากรท่ามกลางสันนิบาตรนี้ว่า
