เขื่อนวชิราลงกรณ์ หรือที่แต่เดิมชาวบ้านเรียกว่า "เขื่อนเขาแหลม" เป็นเขื่อนขนาดใหญ่ เป็นอันดับ 4 ของไทย รองจากเขื่อนภูมิพล เขื่อนศรีนครินทร์ และเขื่อนสิริกิติ์ เป็นเขื่อนอเนกประสงค์ ใช้ในการผลิตกระแสไฟฟ้าพลังน้ำ มีลักษณะเป็นเขื่อนหิน ถมดาดหน้าด้วยคอนกรีตเสริมเหล็กสูง 92 เมตร สันเขื่อนกว้าง 10 เมตร ยาว 1,019 เมตร ปริมาตรตัวเขื่อนประมาณ 8.1 ล้านลูกบาศก์เมตร กั้นปิดลำน้ำ ที่มาจากการรวมตัวของแม่น้ำสามสายคือ แม่น้ำบิคลี่ ซองกาเลีย รันตี ทางตอนเหนือในอำเภอสังขละบุรี และถูกปล่อยไปเป็นลำน้ำแควน้อย ที่ถือว่าเป็นเส้นเลือดใหญ่ของจังหวัดกาญจนบุรี

เขื่อนวชิราลงกรณ์ ตั้งอยู่ที่ตำบลท่าขนุน เหนือตัวอำเภอทองผาภูมิไปอีกประมาณ 6 กิโลเมตร อยู่ห่างจากตัวเมืองกาญจนบุรีประมาณ 153 กิโลเมตร ได้เริ่มก่อสร้างในเดือนมีนาคม พ.ศ. 2522 และเสร็จในปี พ.ศ. 2527 ทำพิธีเปิดเมื่อวันที่ 9 มกราคม พ.ศ.2529 โดยพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เสด็จพระราชดำเนินพร้อมด้วยสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ และสมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอเจ้าฟ้าจุฬาภรณ์วลัยลักษณ์ฯ ทรงประกอบพิธีเปิด เขื่อนเขาแหลมมีความจุที่ประมาณ 8,860 ล้านลูกบาศก์เมตร ติดตั้งเครื่องกำเนิดไฟฟ้า 3 เครื่อง ขนาดกำลังผลิตรวมทั้งสิ้น 300,000 กิโลวัตต์ ให้พลังงานไฟฟ้าเฉลี่ยปีละ 760 ล้านกิโลวัตต์ชั่วโมง
