เป็นวัดใหญ่และวัดสำคัญของกรุงสุโขทัย ตั้งอยู่กลางเมือง สร้างขึ้นในสมัยพ่อขุนศรีอินทราทิตย์ มีพระเจดีย์แบบต่าง ๆ มากถึง 200 องค์ มีพระเจดีย์มหาธาตุทรงดอกบัวตูม หรือทรงพุ่มข้าวบิณฑ์ ศิลปะแบบสุโขทัยแท้ เป็นเจดีย์ประธาน รายรอบด้วยเจดีย์ 8 องค์ บนฐานเดียวกัน คือ ปรางค์ศิลาแลงตั้งอยู่ที่ทิศทั้ง 4 และเจดีย์ทรงปราสาทแบบศรีวิชัยผสมลังกา ก่อด้วยอิฐได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากล้านนา ด้านตะวันออกบนเจดีย์ประธานมีวิหารขนาดใหญ่ก่อด้วยศิลาแลง มีแท่นซึ่งเคยเป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปสำริด ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในประเทศไทย คือ พระศรีศากยมุนี ปัจจุบันประดิษฐานอยู่ที่วัดสุทัศน์ฯ กรุงเทพมหานคร
