อนุสัญญาฉบับนี้มีบทบัญญัติรวม 30 มาตรา เพื่อให้รัฐภาคีหรือประเทศสมาชิกใช้เป็นแนวทางในการกำหนดนโยบายและมาตรการดำเนินงานด้านนิติบัญญัติ ตุลาการ การบริหาร หรือมาตรการอื่น ๆ เกี่ยวกับการขจัดการเลือกปฏิบัติทั้งมวลต่อสตรี และให้หลักประกันว่าสตรีจะต้องได้รับสิทธิประโยชน์และโอกาสต่าง ๆ จากรัฐบนพื้นฐานของความเสมอภาคกับบุรุษ โดยมาตราที่ 1-16 เป็นการระบุมาตรการในการดำเนินการเพื่อขจัดการเลือกปฏิบัติต่อสตรีในด้านต่าง ๆ ส่วนมาตราที่ 17-30 เป็นการกำหนดขั้นตอนและกลไกในการติดตามการปฏิบัติงานตามอนุสัญญาฯ
