สาระสำคัญของกฎบัตรอาเซียน

          จากโครงสร้างบทบัญญัติ 13 หมวดข้างต้น หากนำมาสรุปสาระสำคัญเป็นหมวดหมู่ต่าง ๆ เพื่อให้เห็นภาพรวมชัดขึ้น ว่า กฎบัตรอาเซียนมีวัตถุประสงค์ และสาระสำคัญอย่างไรบ้าง ก็จะสรุปได้ดังนี้ 

- ด้านเศรษฐกิจ  

          มีสาระสำคัญ คือ เพื่อสร้างตลาดและฐานการผลิตเดียวที่มีเสถียรภาพ มั่งคั่ง และมีความสามารถในการแข่งขันสูง มีการรวมตัวทางเศรษฐกิจที่มีการเคลื่อนย้ายเสรีของสินค้า การบริการ การลงทุน และแรงงาน การเคลื่อนย้ายทุนเสรียิ่งขึ้น

- ด้านการเมืองความมั่นคง 

          เน้นการคุ้มครองสิทธิมนุษยชนและเสรีภาพขั้นพื้นฐาน เสริมสร้างประชาธิปไตย เพิ่มพูนธรรมาภิบาลและหลักนิติธรรม ตอบสนองต่อสิ่งท้าทายความมั่นคง เช่น การก่อการร้าย ธำรงรักษาเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ให้เป็นเขตปลอดอาวุธนิวเคลียร์ และไม่มีอาวุธที่มีอานุภาพทำลายล้างสูงทุกชนิด

- ด้านความมั่นคงของมนุษย์

- ด้านวัฒนธรรม 

          ส่งเสริมอัตลักษณ์ของอาเซียน โดยเคารพความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรมและมรดกของภูมิภาค รวมทั้งร่วมกันอนุรักษ์มรดกทางวัฒนธรรม
      
- ด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม
