ประเทศไทยกับประเทศญี่ปุ่นมีความสัมพันธ์ทางเศรษฐกิจที่แน่นแฟ้นกันอย่างยิ่ง ซึ่งสามารถเห็นได้ชัดจากตัวเลขต่างๆ ดังที่จะกล่าวในต่อไปนี้

ปี พ. ศ. 2547 ญี่ปุ่นเป็นประเทศคู่ค้ารายใหญ่ที่สุดของไทย ในขณะที่ไทยได้ชื่อว่าเป็นประเทศคู่ค้ารายใหญ่ที่สุดของญี่ปุ่นในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ หรือเป็นรายใหญ่อันดับที่ 7 จากทั่วโลก โดยมีมูลค่าการค้าสูงถึง 34,000 ล้านดอลล่าร์สหรัฐ มูลค่าการส่งออกจากไทยไปยังญี่ปุ่นนั้นมีสัดส่วนร้อยละ 14.0 จากมูลค่าการส่งออกจากไทยสู่ทั่วโลก เป็นอันดับที่ 2 รองจากการส่งออกไปสหรัฐ ในขณะที่มูลค่าการนำเข้าจากญี่ปุ่นคิดเป็นร้อยละ 23.6 ของมูลค่าการนำเข้าจากนานาประเทศสู่ไทย จึงกล่าวได้ว่าญี่ปุ่นเป็นประเทศแหล่งนำเข้ารายใหญ่ที่สุดสำหรับประเทศไทย

ส่วนการลงทุนโดยตรงจากญี่ปุ่นในประเทศไทยที่ผ่านมาจนถึงปี 2547 มีมูลค่าคิดเป็นสัดส่วนประมาณร้อยละ 40 ของมูลค่าการลงทุนโดยตรงจากต่างประเทศทั้งหมด โดยที่ญี่ปุ่นเป็นประเทศผู้ลงทุนรายใหญ่ที่สุด ปัจจุบันจึงมีบริษัทญี่ปุ่นที่ตั้งฐานการผลิตในประเทศไทยนั้นมากถึง 1,234 แห่ง (ทั้งนี้ เฉพาะบริษัทที่ลงทะเบียนกับหอการค้าญี่ปุ่นในกรุงเทพฯ เท่านั้น) และบริษัทเหล่านี้ได้จ้างแรงงานคนไทยมากเกือบ 4 แสนคน

การเดินทางไปมาระหว่างประชาชนทั้งสองประเทศก็คึกคักเช่นกัน ในปี 2547 มีชาวญี่ปุ่นเดินทางเข้ามาประเทศไทยมากถึง 1.21 ล้านคน เป็นอันดับสองรองจากมาเลเซีย แต่ในขณะเดียวกันคนไทยที่เดินทางไปยังญี่ปุ่นนั้นมีประมาณ 1แสนคน ซึ่งถือว่ายังเป็นจำนวนน้อย ดังนั้นเพื่อที่จะเพิ่มจำนวนคนไทยให้ไปเยือนญี่ปุ่นและรู้จักญี่ปุ่นให้มากขึ้น รัฐบาลญี่ปุ่นจึงได้จัดให้มีการรณรงค์ “Visit Japan Campaign” เพื่อดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยวชาวต่างชาติให้มาเยือนประเทศญี่ปุ่นมากขึ้น โดยกำหนดให้ประเทศไทยเป็นตลาดที่สำคัญ

ไทยและญี่ปุ่นกำลังดำเนินการเจรจาว่าด้วยเขตการค้าเสรี (FTA) หรือชื่อทางการว่า “ข้อตกลงความเป็นหุ้นส่วนไทย – ญี่ปุ่น (JTEPA)” ทั้งสองประเทศคาดหวังว่าจะสามารถบรรลุข้อตกลงได้ภายในต้นปีหน้า เป้าหมายของ JTEPA นั้นนอกจากเป็นการเปิดตลาดการค้าสินค้าโดยเสรีแล้ว ยังครอบคลุมถึงสาขาอื่นๆ อย่างกว้างขวาง รวมถึงการบริการ กฎระเบียบการลงทุน การเคลื่อนย้ายบุคลากร และการปกป้องทรัพย์สินทางปัญญา เป็นต้น ดังนั้น ข้อตกลงดังกล่าวจึงมีชื่อว่า ข้อตกลงความเป็นหุ้นส่วน (EPA)แทนข้อตกลงเขตการค้าเสรี (FTA) ผลจากการประเมินของมูลนิธิสถาบันวิจัยเพื่อการพัฒนาแห่งประเทศไทย (TDRI) พบว่า หาก JTEPA มีผลบังคับใช้แล้ว GDP ( ผลผลิตมวลรวมประชาชาติ) ของไทยจะเพิ่มขึ้นร้อยละ 1.81 การส่งออกไปยังประเทศญี่ปุ่นจะเพิ่มขึ้นเป็นร้อยละ 3.44 และการลงทุนจากประเทศญี่ปุ่นจะเพิ่มขึ้นเป็นร้อยละ 3.17 ส่งผลให้ความสัมพันธ์ทางเศรษฐกิจระหว่างไทย – ญี่ปุ่น และมิตรภาพที่ดีงามระหว่างทั้งสองประเทศ ที่ใกล้ชิดแน่นแฟ้นอยู่แล้ว จะทวีความมั่นคงสถาพรยิ่งขึ้น
