8.สัมมาสมาธิ หมายถึง การทำสมาธิในทางที่ถูกต้อง สมาธินั้นหมายถึง การที่จิต ตั้งมั่นในอารมณ์อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งที่เป็นกุศล ความที่จิตใจมั่นคงไม่หวั่นไหว ไม่ฟุ้งซ่าน ท่านแสดงสมาธิไว้ 3 ระดับ คือ
8.1 ขณิกสมาธิ สมาธิชั่วขณะ
8.2 อุปจารสมาธิ สมาธิเฉียดฌาน หรือใกล้ฌาน
8.3 อัปปนาสมาธิ สมาธิแน่วแน่ หรือสมาธิในฌาน
แต่สมาธิที่หมายถึงในมรรคมีองค์ 8 นั้นคือ อัปปนาสมาธิ หรือสมาธิในฌาน 4 ตามพระบาลีมัคควิภังคสูตร8)องค์มรรคทั้ง 8 นี้ เมื่อรวมตัวกันเข้าเป็นมัคคสมังคี ก่อให้เกิดสัมมาญาณคือความรู้ชอบ หรือยถาภูตญาณทรรศนะ(ความรู้เห็นตามความเป็นจริง) นี่แหละคือตัวอริยมรรคตามแนวพระพุทธพจน์ ซึ่งสรุปให้เข้าใจง่ายดังนี้
“ เมื่อมีโยนิโสมนสิการ(การทำในใจอย่างแยบคาย อย่างมีปัญญา) ปราโมชย่อมเกิด เมื่อมีปราโมช ปีติย่อมเกิด เมื่อปีติเกิด ปัสสัทธิย่อมเกิด เมื่อมีปัสสัทธิเกิด สุขย่อมเกิด เมื่อสุขเกิด สมาธิย่อมเกิด เมื่อสมาธิเกิด ยถาภูตญาณทรรศนะย่อมเกิด เมื่อยถาภูตญาณทรรศนะเกิดนิพพิทา(ความหน่าย) ย่อมเกิด เมื่อนิพพิทาเกิดวิราคะ(ความคลายกำหนัด) ย่อมเกิด เมื่อวิราคะเกิด วิมุติ(ความหลุดพ้น) ย่อมเกิด รวม 9 ประการ ซึ่งมีอุปการะและหนุนเนื่องไปสู่วิมุติความหลุดพ้นจากกิเลส”9)
ต่อจากสัมมาญาณหรือยถาภูตญาณทรรศนะ ถ้ากล่าวอย่างรวบรัดก็จะไปถึงสัมมาวิมุติ แต่ถ้าขยายออกไปในระหว่างนั้นมีญาณต่างๆ คั่นอยู่หลายประการ กล่าวคือ
1.โคตรภูญาณ แปลว่า ญาณคร่อมโคตร คือ ระหว่างโคตรปุถุชนกับอริยชน ตั้งอยู่กึ่งกลางระหว่างความเป็นปุถุชนกับอริยชน เรียกไม่ได้ว่าเป็นปุถุชนหรืออริยชน เปรียบเหมือนคนข้ามฝั่งด้วยเรือเมื่อเทียบท่าแล้ว ขาข้างหนึ่งก้าวขึ้นอยู่บนบก อีกข้างหนึ่งยังอยู่ในเรือ หรืออีกอุปมาหนึ่งเหมือนสภาพของเวลาที่เราเรียกว่า สองสี ส่องแสงกึ่งกลางระหว่างความมืดกับ ความสว่าง ระหว่างกลางคืนกับกลางวัน
2.มรรคญาณ ญาณในมรรค มีโสดาปัตติมรรค เป็นต้น ญาณนี้จะทำหน้าที่ตัดกิเลสให้ขาด เหมือนยาเข้าไปทำลายหรือตัดโรค
3.ผลญาณ ญาณในผล คือ รู้ว่าผลแห่งการกำจัดกิเลสได้เป็นอย่างไร เป็นความสงบสุขอย่างไร เปรียบเหมือนความสุขของคนที่หายโรคแล้ว รู้ว่าโรคหายเด็ดขาดไม่เกิดขึ้นอีก
4.ปัจจเวกขณญาณ การพิจารณากิเลสที่ละได้แล้ว และกิเลสที่ยังไม่ได้ละว่ามีจำนวนเท่าใด สำหรับพระอริยบุคคล 3 จำพวกแรก ส่วนพระอรหันต์พิจารณาเฉพาะกิเลสที่ละได้แล้วอย่างเดียว ไม่ต้องพิจารณากิเลสที่ยังไม่ได้ละ เพราะไม่มีกิเลสอะไรจะต้องละอีกแล้วการที่ความสงบสุขอันเกิดจากการตัดกิเลสได้เป็นไปยั่งยืน ไม่ต้องคอยระวังเพื่อไม่ให้ เกิดขึ้นอีกนั่นเอง คือ นิพพาน แปลว่า ความดับสนิท เย็นสนิทที่กล่าวนี้เป็นกระบวนการของอริยมรรคอันประกอบด้วยองค์ 8 ซึ่งเป็นปฏิปทานำไปสู่ความดับทุกข์ หรือทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทาอริยสัจ
