การจัดงานวันครูได้จัดเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อ 16 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2500 กระทรวงศึกษาธิการสั่งการให้นักเรียนและครูหยุดในวันดังกล่าวได้ ในส่วนกลางใช้สถานที่ของกรีฑาสถานแห่งชาติเป็นที่จัดงานวันครูนี้ได้กำหนดเป็นหลักการให้มีอนุสรณ์งานวันครูไว้แก่อนุชนรุ่นหลังทุกปี อนุสรณ์ที่สำคัญคือ หนังสือประวัติครู หนังสือที่ระลึกวันครู และสิ่งก่อสร้างเป็นถาวรวัตถุ
การจัดงานวันครูได้ปรับปรุงเปลี่ยนแปลงกิจกรรมให้สอดคล้องกับการเปลี่ยนแปลงของสังคมตลอดเวลา ในปัจจุบันได้จัดรูปแบบ การจัดงานวันครูจะมีกิจกรรม 3 ประเภทหลักดังนี้

• กิจกรรมทางศาสนา
• พิธีรำลึกถึงพระคุณบูรพาจารย์ ประกอบด้วยพิธีปฏิญาณตน การกล่าวคำระลึกถึงพระคุณบูรพาจารย์
• กิจกรรมเพื่อความสามัคคีระหว่างผู้ประกอบอาชีพครู ส่วนมากเป็นการแข่งขันกีฬาหรือการจัดงานรื่นเริงในตอนเย็น
