ประเพณียี่เป็ง เชียงใหม่ จัดขึ้นในช่วงเดือนพฤศจิกายน ทุกปี ณ เขตเทศบาลนครเชียงใหม่ หน้าสำนักงานเทศบาลนครเชียงใหม่
ยี่เป็งเป็นงานประเพณี อันยิ่งใหญ่แห่งดินแดนล้านนา ที่ได้ปฎิบัติ สืบทอดกันมาตั้งแต่ครั้งโบราณกาลหรือวันเพ็ญเดือนยี่ของชาวล้านนา ตรงกับวันเพ็ญเดือน 12 ของภาคกลาง อันเป็นช่วงปลายฤดูฝนต้นฤดูหนาวอากาศปลอดโปร่งท้องฟ้าแจ่มใส ชาวล้านนานอกเหนือจากการลอยกระทงในแม่น้ำแล้วก็มีการจุดประทีปโคมลอยขึ้นไปสว่างไสวบนท้องฟ้าโดยมีความเชื่อว่า เพื่อบูชาพระเกตุแก้วจุฬามณี บนสรวงสวรรค์ หรือบ้างก็เชื่อว่าเป็นการลอยเคราะห์ หรือสะเดาะเคราะห์ให้เกิดความเป็นมงคลแก่ชีวิต งานประเพณีจะมีสามวันคือ
1.วันขึ้นสิบสามค่ำ หรือ วันดา เป็นวันซื้อของเตรียมไปทำบุญที่วัด
2.วันขึ้นสิบสี่ค่ำ จะไปทำบุญกันที่วัด พร้อมทำกระทงใหญ่ไว้ที่วัดและนำของกินมาใส่กระทงเพื่อทำทานให้แก่คนยากจน
3.วันขึ้นสิบห้าค่ำ จะนำกระทงใหญ่ที่วัดและกระทงเล็กส่วนตัวไปลอยในลำน้ำ
ความสำคัญของประเพณียี่เป็ง ตามวัฒนธรรมของล้านนาจะแบ่งโคมไฟออกเป็น 4 แบบ คือ
