จากแนวคิดของระบบเศรษฐกิจพอเพียงดังกล่าวข้างต้น จึงนำไปสู่นโยบายตามระเบียบสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรีว่าด้วยคณะกรรมการอำนวยการ หนึ่งตำบลหนึ่งผลิตภัณฑ์แห่งชาติ พ.ศ. 2544 เพื่อส่งเสริมสนับสนุนกระบวนการพัฒนาท้องถิ่น สร้างชุมชนให้เข้มแข็งเพื่อพึ่งตนเองได้ ให้ประชาชนมีส่วนร่วมในการสร้างงาน สร้างรายได้ ด้วยการนำทรัพยากรและภูมิปัญญาในท้องถิ่นมาพัฒนาเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ที่มีจุดเด่น และมีมูลค่าเป็นที่ต้องการของตลาดทั้งในและต่างประเทศ และสอดคล้องกับวัฒนธรรมและวิถีชีวิตของท้องถิ่น
