ปัจจุบันระบบเศรษฐกิจของประเทศไทยประกอบด้วยธุรกิจขนาดกลางและขนาดเล็กมากกว่าร้อยละ 90 ของธุรกิจ ทั้งประเทศ โดยมีการจดทะเบียนเป็นจํานวนมากกว่า 2 ล้านราย ก่อให้เกิดการจ้างงานคิดเป็นร้อยละ 76 ของทั้งหมด และยังช่วยกระจายรายได้ในอีกหลายกลุ่ม ดังนั้น ธุรกิจ SME จึงมีบทบาทสําคัญในการขับเคลื่อนเศรษฐกิจของประเทศ

การขยายกิจการเติบโตจนสามารถส่งออกสินค้า ไปแข่งขันในตลาดต่างประเทศได้จึงเป็นความฝันของผู้ประกอบการ SMEs ซึ่งในปัจจุบันเทคโนโลยี Logistics และการสื่อสารที่ก้าวหน้าทําให้การติดต่อหาคู่ค้าจากทั่วทุกมุมโลก เป็นไปได้ง่ายและมีค่าใช้จ่ายน้อยลงกว่าแต่ก่อน ทางภาครัฐก็ริเริ่มโครงการสนับสนุนหลายโครงการ แต่เมื่อพิจารณาตัวเลขปริมาณการส่งออกทั้งหมดของไทยแล้ว มีเพียงร้อยละ 26 เท่านั้นที่เป็นการส่งออกจากภาค SMEs ของไทย
