ความเป็นมา

ในสมัยที่พระเจ้าศรีธรรมโศกราชเป็นกษัตริย์ครองตามพรลิงค์(นครศรีธรรมราช) อยู่นั้น ได้มีการบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ครั้งใหญ่และแล้วเสร็จในปี พ.ศ.๑๗๗๓ ขณะที่เตรียมสมโภชพระบรมธาตุอยู่นั้น ชาวปากพนังมากราบทูลว่า คลื่นได้ซัดเอาผ้าแถบยาวผืนหนึ่งซึ่งมีภาพเขียนเรื่องพุทธประวัติมาขึ้นที่ชายหาดปากพนัง ชาวปากพนังเก็บผ้านั้นถวายพระเจ้าศรีธรรมโศกราช พระองค์รับสั่งให้ซักผ้านั้นจนสะอาดเห็นภาพวาดพุทธประวัติ เรียกว่า ?ผ้าพระบฏ? จึงรับสั่งให้ประกาศหาเจ้าของ ได้ความว่าชาวพุทธจากหงสากลุ่มหนึ่ง จะนำผ้าพระบฏไปบูชาพระพุทธบาทที่ลังกา แต่ถูกพายุพัดพามาขึ้นชายฝั่งปากพนัง เหลือผู้รอดชีวิตสิบคนพระเจ้าศรีธรรมโศกราชทรงมีความเห็นว่าควรนำผ้าพระบฏไปห่มพระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ เนื่องในโอกาสสมโภชพระบรมธาตุ แม้จะไม่ใช่พระพุทธบาทตามที่ตั้งใจ แต่ก็เป็นพระบรมสารีริกธาตุซึ่งเจ้าของผ้าพระบฏก็ยินดี การแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุจึงมีขึ้นตั้งแต่ปีนั้นและดำเนินการสืบต่อมา จนกลายเป็นประเพณีสำคัญของชาวนครศรีธรรมราชในปัจจุบัน

ระยะเวลาดำเนินการ

แต่เดิมการแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุนิยมจัดปีละสองครั้ง ในวันขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือนสาม (วันมาฆบูชา) และวันขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือนหก (วันวิสาขบูชา) โดยนำผ้าไปห่มองค์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ ณ วัดพระมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร ปัจจุบันนิยมทำกันในวันขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือนสาม (วันมาฆบูชา) มากกว่า

สาระสำคัญ

๑. แสดงให้เห็นลักษณะสังคมของนครศรีธรรมราช ที่ยึดมั่นอยู่ในพระพุทธศาสนาการทำบุญเพื่ออุทิศเป็นพุทธบูชาเพื่อประสงค์ให้ใกล้ชิดกับพระพุทธเจ้า
๒. แสดงให้เห็นว่าองค์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ เป็นศูนย์รวมจิตใจ ศูนย์รวมความศรัทธา พุทธศาสนิกชนทั่วไปทุกทิศจึงประสงค์มาห่มผ้าพระธาตุอย่างพร้อมเพรียงกัน

ประเพณีแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุ แห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุ หมายถึง การแห่ผ้าผืนยาว ไปบูชาพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า โดยการนำขึ้นห่มโอบล้อมรอบองค์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ ณ วัดพระมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร เป็นประเพณีที่ชาวนครศรีธรรมราชและพุทธศาสนิกชนที่อยู่ในจังหวัดใกล้เคียง ยึดถือปฏิบัติสืบทอดกันมาเป็นเวลายาวนาน

ความเชื่อ นครศรีธรรมราชรับพระพุทธศาสนามาจากอินเดียและลังกา จึงรับความเชื่อของชาวอินเดียและลังกาเข้ามาด้วย ชาวพุทธในอินเดียเชื่อว่าการทำบุญและการกราบไหว้บูชาที่ให้ได้กุศลจริง จะต้องปฏิบัติต่อพระพักตร์และให้ใกล้ชิดกับพระพุทธเจ้าให้มากที่สุดแม้พระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จปรินิพพานแล้วแต่ก็ยังมีสัญลักษณ์ของพระพุทธองค์อยู่ ได้แก่ พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ พระพุทธรูป เป็นต้น การกราบไหว้บูชาสิ่งเหล่านี้เท่ากับเป็นกราบไหว้บูชาพระพุทธเจ้าโดยตรงเช่นกัน ด้วยเหตุนี้จึงเชื่อกันมาว่า การนำผ้าไปบูชาพระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ ถือเป็นการบูชาที่ใกล้ชิดกับพระพุทธองค์ ชาวพุทธในนครศรีธรรมราชจากทุกที่จึงมุ่งหมายมาสักการะเมื่อถึงวันดังกล่าว

พิธีกรรม

การเตรียมผ้าพระบฏ ผ้าที่นำขึ้นแห่องค์พระธาตุเจดีย์ มักจะนิยมใช้สีขาว เหลือง และแดง พุทธศานิกชนคนใดต้องการห่มผ้าพระธาตุ จะตระเตรียมผ้าขนาดความยาว ตามความศรัทธาของตน เมื่อไปถึงวัดจะนำผ้ามาผูกต่อกันเป็นขนาดยาวที่สามารถห่มพระบรมธาตุรอบองค์ได้ หากใครต้องการทำบุญร่วมด้วยก็จะบริจาคเงินสมทบในขบวนผ้าพระบฏนี้ก็ได้ บางคนประดิษฐ์ตกแต่งชายขอบผ้าประดับด้วยริบบิ้น พู่ห้อยแพรพรรณ ลวดลายดอกไม้สวยงามแต่ผ้าห่มพระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ผืนพิเศษ จะเขียนภาพพุทธประวัติทั้งผืนยาว โดยช่างผู้ชำนาญเขียนภาพแสดงให้เห็นถึงความตั้งใจ ความมานะพยายามในการทำผ้าพระบฏขึ้นเพื่อเป็นพุทธบูชาองค์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ แต่ในปัจจุบัน ผ้าพระบฏซึ่งมีสีขาว สีแดง สีเหลือง ส่วนใหญ่เป็นผ้ายาวเรียบ ๆ ธรรมดา ผ้าพระบฏสีขาว เหลือง แดง

การจัดขบวนแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุ เมื่อถึงวันแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุ มีการจัดอาหารคาวหวาน เครื่องอุปโภคและบริโภคไปถวายพระสงฆ์ในวัดพระบรมธาตุวรมหาวิหาร โดยการหาบคอนกันไปเป็นขบวนแห่ที่สวยงามพร้อมนำผ้าพระบฏไปวัดด้วย ผ้าพระบฏเขียนภาพพุทธประวัติ

สมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เมื่อครั้งเสด็จพระราชดำเนินมายังนครศรีธรรมราช ได้มีการจัดแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุในวันมาฆบูชาและจัดให้มีการเวียนเทียนรอบองค์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ ชาวบ้านได้นำผ้าที่เตรียมมาแห่งห่มพระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ด้วย

ในปัจจุบันมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปแบบปฏิบัติไปจากเดิมบ้าง โดยได้ยกเลิกการนำภัตตาหาร เครื่องอุปโภคและบริโภคที่นำไปทำบุญถวายพระ การประดับตกแต่งผ้าพระบฏก็ลดหรือตัดไปยังมีก็เฉพาะแต่ผ้าพระบฏของบางหน่วยงาน เช่น สถาบันราชภัฏนครศรีธรรมราช และวิทยาลัยศิลปหัตถกรรมนครศรีธรรมราช เป็นต้น

เดิมการแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุจะนัดหมายโดยพร้อมเพรียงกันเป็นขบวนใหญ่ แต่ในปัจจุบันการเดินทางสะดวกขึ้น ผู้คนที่ศรัทธาก็มาจากหลายทิศทาง ต่างคนต่างคณะ ต่างจึงเตรียมผ้ามาห่มพระธาตุ ใครจะตั้งขบวนแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุในเวลาใดก็สุดแต่ความสะดวก ขบวนแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุจึงมีตลอดทั้งวันโดยไม่ขาดสาย เดิมขบวนแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุทุกขบวน นิยมใช้ดนตรีพื้นบ้านนำหน้าขบวน ได้แก่ ดนตรีหนังตะลุง ดนตรีโนรา แต่ในปัจจุบันเปลี่ยนมาเป็นกลองยาวบรรเลงจังหวะที่ครึกครื้น เพื่อช่วยให้เกิดความเพลิดเพลิน ขบวนแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุจะเดินเป็นแถวเรียงเป็นริ้วยาวไปตามความยาวของผืนผ้า ทุกคนชู (เทิน) ผ้าพระบฏไว้เหนือศีรษะ ทั้งนี้เพราะเชื่อกันว่าผ้าพระบฏเป็นเครื่องสักการะพระพุทธเจ้าจึงควรถือไว้ในระดับสูงกว่าศีรษะ การถวายผ้าพระบฏ เมื่อแห่ถึงวัดพระมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหารแล้วจะทำพิธีถวายผ้าพระบฏ โดยมีหัวหน้าคณะกล่าวนำด้วยภาษาบาลีแล้วตามด้วยคำแปลซึ่งมีใจความว่า “ข้าแต่พระผู้เจริญ ข้าพเจ้าทั้งหลาย ขอน้อมถวายผ้าห่มพระธาตุนี้แก่พระพุทธเจ้า เพื่อเป็นพุทธบูชา ข้าพเจ้าทั้งหลายขอกราบไหว้ซึ่งเจดีย์ทั้งหลายในสถานที่นี้ ขออานิสงส์แห่งบุญกุศล ของข้าพเจ้าทั้งหลายจงมีแก่ข้าพเจ้าและญาติมิตรทั้งหลายเพื่อความสุขความเจริญตลอดกาลนานเทอญ” การนำผ้าขึ้นห่มองค์พระธาตุเจดีย์ หลังจากกล่าวคำถวายผ้าพระบฏเรียบร้อยแล้ว จะแห่ทักษิณาวัตรรอบองค์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ 3 รอบ แล้วน้ำผ้าสู่วิหารพระทรงม้า เมื่อถึงตอนนี้ผู้ที่ร่วมในขบวนแห่จะส่งผู้แทนเพียงสามหรือสี่คนสมทบกับเจ้าหน้าที่ของวัดนำผ้าพระบฏขึ้นโอบรอบพระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ ไม่สามารถขึ้นไป
