ข้าวเหนียวพันธุ์ กข16 ได้จากการผสมพันธุ์ฤดูนาปี พ.ศ. 2539 ระหว่าง พันธุ์ กข6 ข้าวคุณภาพดี เป็นพันธุ์แม่ และพันธุ์ หางยี 71 ข้าวต้านทานต่อโรคไหม้ และอายุสั้น เป็นพันธุ์พ่อ ฤดูนาปรังพ.ศ.2540- ฤดูนาปี พ.ศ. 2540 ผสมกลับ (backcross) ไปหาพันธุ์ กข6 จำนวน 2 ครั้ง ฤดูนาปี พ.ศ. 2541-2543 ปลูกและคัดเลือกแบบสืบประวัติ จนได้สายพันธุ์ KKN97057-7-1-1 ฤดูนาปี พ.ศ. 2544-2545ศึกษาพันธุ์ เปรียบเทียบผลผลิตภายในสถานี ที่ศูนย์วิจัยข้าวขอนแก่น และเปรียบเทียบผลผลิตระหว่างสถานีภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ฤดูนาปี พ.ศ. 2546 เปรียบเทียบผลผลิตระหว่างภาคเหนือตอนบนและภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ฤดูนาปี พ.ศ. 2547-2548 เปรียบเทียบผลผลิตในนาราษฎร์ภาคเหนือตอนบนและภาคตะวันนอกเฉียงเหนือ จำนวน 10 แห่ง ประเมินความชอบลักษณะทางการเกษตร และคุณภาพหุงต้มรับประทานโดยเกษตรกรมีส่วนร่วม ฤดูนาปี พ.ศ. 2548 ศูนย์วิจัยข้าวเชียงใหม่ นำรวงข้าวที่เก็บรักษาไว้มาปลูกแบบรวงต่อแถว จำนวน 200 รวง คัดเลือกลักษณะที่เกษตรกรต้องการ ได้รวงที่ 46 ให้ชื่อสายพันธุ์ KKN97057-7-1-1-CMI-46 นาปี พ.ศ. 2549-50 ปลูกศึกษาพันธุ์ และเปรียบเทียบผลผลิตภายในสถานี ฤดูนาปี พ.ศ. 2551 ปลูกเปรียบเทียบผลผลิตในนาราษฎร์ภาคเหนือตอนบน จำนวน 5 แห่ง ประเมินความชอบลักษณะทางการเกษตร และคุณภาพการหุงต้มรับประทานโดยเกษตรกรมีส่วนร่วม ฤดูนาปี พ.ศ. 2552 ปลูกเปรียบเทียบผลผลิตระหว่างสถานี ภาคเหนือตอนบนและภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ทดสอบปฏิกิริยาต่อโรคไหม้ วิเคราะห์คุณภาพทางกายภาพและเคมีของเมล็ด ศึกษาการตอบสนองต่อปุ๋ยไนโตรเจน คณะกรรมการพิจารณาพันธุ์ กรมการข้าว มีมติรับรองพันธุ์ ชื่อ กข16 เพื่อแนะนำให้เกษตรกรปลูก เมื่อวันที่ 28 กันยายน 2553
