ประวัติ
วันพ่อแห่งชาติ ได้จัดให้มีขึ้นครั้งแรก เมื่อวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2523 โดยคุณหญิงเนื้อทิพย์ เสมรสุต นายกสมาคมผู้อาสาสมัครและช่วยการศึกษา หลักการและเหตุผลที่มีการจัดตั้งวันพ่อขึ้นแห่งชาติ เนื่องจากพ่อเป็นบุคคลผู้มีพระคุณและมีบทบาทสำคัญต่อครอบครัวและสังคมที่ผู้เป็นลูกจะเคารพเทิดทูนและตอบแทนพระคุณด้วยความกตัญญู และสังคมควรที่จะยกย่องให้เกียรติรำลึกถึงผู้เป็นพ่อ จึงถือเอาวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม ของทุกปี ซึ่งเป็นวันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษาของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชเป็น "วันพ่อแห่งชาติ"
วัตถุประสงค์
• เพื่อเทิดทูนพระเกียรติคุณของ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว
• เพื่อเทิดทูนพระคุณของพ่อ และยกย่องบทบาทของพ่อที่มีต่อครอบครัวและสังคม
• เพื่อให้ลูกได้แสดงความกตัญญูกตเวทีต่อพ่อ
• เพื่อให้ผู้เป็นพ่อ สำนึกในหน้าที่และความรับผิดชอบของตน
กิจกรรม
ทุกปีจะมีการประดับธงชาติในทุกหน่วยงาน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นสถานที่ราชการ โรงเรียน บริษัท และบ้านเรือน เพื่อถวายพระพรให้พระองค์ทรงมีพระชนมายุยิ่งยืนนาน และยังมีการทำความสะอาดแม่น้ำลำคลอง ถนน โรงพยาบาล และประดับรูปของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ไว้ที่หน้าบริษัทหรือหน่วยงานต่างๆ เพื่อถวายเป็นพระราชกุศลแด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวด้วย
กิจกรรมสำหรับลูกในวันพ่อแห่งชาติ คือ ประดับธงชาติตามอาคารบ้านเรือน จัดกิจกรรมบำเพ็ญประโยชน์ หรือบำเพ็ญกุศล ทำบุญใส่บาตร เพื่ออุทิศส่วนกุศล และระลึกถึงพระคุณของพ่อ
